Brake upgrades
I want to upgrade my stock brakes(they suck A$$, caused me one accident and a lot of close calls). What are the different options and how much do they cost? This is mostly a daily driver/street racer/occasional strip car. I don't need the brakes to be all out road racing setup, just something that will stop well when I need it to and I don't have to slam to the floor to get it to respond.

Kenny Brown still (I think) sells a basic upgrade that's got SS lines, 73mm calipers, pads, and SS caliper bushings. Sells for around $400. Your other options are not quite so economical. Baer, Brembo, and others make some seriously kick @SS kits for (usually) around $1300 and up. But with those kits you definitely get what you pay for.

Also, you can cut away the splash shields at the front rotors. They tend to prevent heat dissipation from the rotors, leading to fade and warped rotors. A pair of tin snips works great for this job, and the price is free.

Check the Corral web page in the Technical Articles. They have a section on brake upgrades. The upgrades were fairly easy and they did help alot therefore, giving the car a more confident feeling when braking.

I would definitely go with the braided brake lines.
Isn't there a project where bigger rotors and calipers can be swapped from a Lincoln or something? Might have to have taller than stock wheels - I don't know. Can someone confirm? Woops, just looked at the Corral and that very article is on there. But, from what it says, your '92 may have come stock with the upgraded parts. ------------------ Greg 91 LX Convertible [This message has been edited by cleangreenmachine (edited 01-16-2001).] |
