EGR Valve Removal or ???
Hello All, I have an 82 Mustang GT 5.0 pretty much stock. I want to put a new intake/carb on it. Currently it has an EGR Valve. I want to know if I can buy a non EGR Edelbrock performer intake and slap it on there. I do not have to pass emissions anymore.
Will I have problems doing this? Will it run ok? What else might I have to do? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! MG |
Fiddling with the EGR is some tricky stuff. Can't speak too technically about it but if you have a computer system, which I THINK you do, you'd probably have to reprogram it to operate without the EGR controls.

well, i bought a EGR eliminator from STEEDA, and a Air Idle Bypass Valve , put that stuff on. I already had all the other emissions stuff off. I love the Air Idle bypass vavle, and the motor runs fine without the EGR for a while now. by the way is your stang carburated?, if it is i do not know what to tell you, mine is fuel injected

Yours being an 82 it will run fine ... you may have a problem with smog nazi's though.

Cody...Air Idle Bypass Valve you say? Is that just another term for an IAC valve? And that EGR eliminator thing, what does it do with the EGR gas? Filter it and release it? Block the passage off?
And to mid.....if he did it with an EFI car, you should be able to do it with a carb no problem I should think...I'd think it'd be harder to do with EFI. |
go here and you will find the Idle bypass valve http://steeda.com/store/-catalog/idlebypass.htm
|
So it IS an IAC, but an adjustable one......wow.. That is the damn niftiest thing I've seen in a long time!! Sounds definitely worth the money! If my idle ever goes funky on me, I'll pick that up...but for right now it's dead on balls. 750-850 when it's warm....you can hear the cam just perfect at that speed. :D :D :D

i think that that item is a steal and a must when tunning your 5.0L. it also fits a 5.8L!
|
Definitely.. Wish they made em for the Camaro when I was working on it...never did get that idle set right. Tach didnt work, but by ear, it sounded just a tad too low, but GM put a handy dandy little METAL PLATE covering the idle adjustment screw, you know, because the computer is so smart that it can practically drive the car by itself.

yeah i hear ya

midevialgnight - Ditch the EGR components. Like you said, since you are in Oregon emissions is not an issue. :) That Edel. manifold along with a 4-barrel carb w/ mechanical secondaries...will be a nice upgrade for your car. |
Thanks for all your help. Yes, it is carb'd. I just bought the edelbrock 289 performer intake w/o egr and a carter afb 625 carb.
I am hoping for a significate increase in HP with just this. Comming from a stock 2v setup I should notice this right? Thanks again for all your input! mg |

Finally done!!!
Ok, I finally got that new edelbrock intake and carter carb on my beast! She sounds and feels much better!!! It is not all that I had hoped but it is still a major improvement. I had several problems.....while taking off the old intake, I broke a bolt. apparently someone had been in there before me and jb welded a smaller stud in one of the intake holes, well of course I broke it off and could not get it out. We had to heat up the head and work it out. I am not sure why they did this an not just put in another right size bolt? The threads were just fine so??? Oh well job done!!
Thanks again for all your help. Next up dual exhaust! |
