Would an 80MM MAFS be TOO Big?
I'm getting new injectors, 24#s and I'll need a new MAFS. Is there any reason NOT to get an 80... would it be too big? I figured I would plan for the future, so if I end up going nutty with the intake and injectors I'd be prepared.
I am planning on installing TFS Twisted Wedge Heads, Street Heat Intake, with 70mm TB and EGR, 24# Injectors and a TFS Stage 1 CAM with FMS 1.6 RRs. As it is all the mass air options are BIGGER then my throttle body anyway, it would seem the TB would be the bottle neck if anything -as |
It will bottle neck. The motor will not suck any more air then it can unless it's forced. If your not planning on running a blower or turbo, I would just get a 75mm (IMO).

though aside from PRICE is there any reason to stay small, it wont effect the way the engine will suck in air? will it? like if it's too big I wont get good enough velocity or something? I'm just thinking of the future... why buy a new unit if I can repalce the tube at some point... though I dont think this car will eer be a full on drag car. Most people dont make convertables drag cars.

No an 80 won't be too big, BUT 24 pound injectors are a waste...there barely better than 19's, you need to go to 30's at least, calibrate the MAF once and build on that.
An 80 may give you a little driveability problems but thats part of modifying a stang ya know. Jay |

And.....
Performance speaking now..........many Stangers are too "Injector Minded", when they really need to concentrate on correct fuel pump sizes in relation to there end package, VOLUME (Pump) is every bit as important as Injector flow rate.

Now you've peaked my curiousity... you're saying 24#s are fine as long as I have the PUMP to back them up? I guess I'm not too familiar with fuel injected setups... but are the various injectors just basicaly bigger nozzles? so the computer says to open and close just the same, but since they are bigger they inject more fuel? and the amount of pressure behind them also determines the fuel amount?

Well.....NO, I'm NOT saying 24's are okay, like I and 5.0patrol said 24's are a waste of money, nothing to build on..........but your on the right track, what I'm saying is that no matter what injector you have, when you modify, for instance when tached out at the finish line at 6000rpm's.......you and the EEC are asking for everything it's got, in other words you could have a beautifull hipo package, with larger injectors, but if you aint got the pump volume to FEED those injectors, they won't be accurate or just plain are unable to do the job for lack of fuel.
A gross example...... a mild bolt-on 5.0, with a Big Nitrous system running a stock 88LPH pump...result..........BANG!!!!!, he could have had killer Lucas 42 lb. injectors with a matched MAF, but with no pump to feed 'em, they can't provide adaquate fuel no matter how BIG the injector is........... |
Are all you crazy? 80mm is too big, and 75mm tb wouldnt even match his intake unless he ports the inlet.
i seen a 80 mm on a 5.0 before, it was turbocharged. 75-77 maf, 70mm tb, is all you need, and trust me, cars are going probaly as fast as you would want to go with those two sizes. |
80mm way too big!!!! I believe you have to have a special chip for the computer to even make the motor run properly with an 80mm. A freind of mine had an 80mm, and just for laughs we tryed it on my car. Didn't work, car wouldn't even start.

It all depends on what the goal for your car is.
"IMO" 24 # injectors will support about 100 more HP than 19 # injectors will. If you are staying Naturally aspirated with a 302 it is pretty damn hard to outgrow the 24 # injectors. I am not a big fan of people running 30 # injectors @ 30psi WOT of fuel pressure. The result is a poor spray pattern which will hurt performance. JMO, |
with the larger MAF does it see less airflow because it's basicaly metering the same amount of air in a larger area. I guess that makes sense... this is a daily driver so I'm not going all out with it now... I'll go with a 76 or so... that sound about right? would a 73 be better?
as for the 24# injectors... I got a good deal on them, so I went with them, I had intended 30#s but I didnt think it would matter so much now... i got a new set of 24s for 150bucks... most places arent even close to that... they are like 219 or so -as |
