Edelbrock Carb Flooding, HELP?
 

So I'm running an edelbrock 600 carb (manual choke), it's retarded. I can't get it to stay running good and I don't know what could be messed up. It will run real rich for a while, it's studders and floods out about 3/4 of the time and almost stalls when I give it more than 1/4 throttle. WHen I start it, sometimes i'll have nice circles on the ground from my turndowns spitting out carbon. So far I've taken the airhorn assembly off twice to reset the floats, it ran fine for about 3 days after the first time. Last weekend I set the floats slightly lower, removed the choke and grinded/polished any casting marks and defects and contoured any sharp edged hoping to get air in slightly better. It felt the fastest that it's been so far after I put it back together, but that only lasted 2 days. Now it's back to flooding, sometimes it'll almost stall when I brake hard. The only thing I can think of is maybe dirt isgetting past my filter and getting stuck in the needle/seat or one of the floats has a real small hole and is taking in gas after a while, but it always runs good after I take it apart. Any ideas? I want to get a Speed Demon, but I'm moving out saturday and won't have money for a few weeks.

Are your floats maybe filling with gas and sinking? When a needle and seat sticks it usually prevents gas from entering the carb.

I'm gonna take it apart and check the floats, thats the only thing I can think of that would do it when it does every time. As far as the needle, I figured if there was a piece of dirt betweet the needle/seat it would keep the needle from seating fully and let gas past it. I just hope I can get it fixed soon, I'm moving out tomorrow and I'll be making a good amount of trips, the last few days I've been having to put in around $8-12 in gas every day. Another problem is the needle and seats on the AFB style carbs can only hold about 5.5psi of pressure, do you have an adjustable regulator?

I'm using an Edelbrock Performer mechanical pump which is recommended for use with the rest of the edelbrock parts (I'm using an RPM intake/cam), although it says the pump puts out around 6 psi and doesn't NEED a regulator. Would 1/2 psi make a difference? Also, the pump wouldn't be putting out that much at idle anyway, so that wouldn't really explain it running rich even at idle or why it would run like a dream for a few days then turn to sh*t. What could possible be changing over the couple of days except for a messed up float filling slowly with fuel or maybe it just happened to have some dirt get in it both times around the same time, but I'd think it might clean out eventually or my fuel filter would be pretty dirty first. I still need to check the floats for leaks, so I'll try to get to it this weekend. I appreciate everyones input, keep the ideas coming.

If its only putting out 6 psi than it probably isn't the problem then. Other than that have you tried jetting it down or going to thicker metering rods? There may be a manufacturing flaw elsewhere in the carb too because usually these things are bolt on and go and pretty reliable.

Hey there my dad had the same problem with his carb and he did everthing and he found out that dirt was getting through the filter and getting into the carb and flooding it, like you said every time we would stop at a light it would stall. try to check the filter he doubled it up and put 2 filters on and it works fine now.
