What are the best shifting points
What are the best shifting points for boths
everyday driving and racing? |
depends on the car really.. power band etc...
------------------ 84 convt,'95 302,AFR's, performer 3.55's, underdrives stock shorties stock cam, 1.7's 14.06@100.21, 255RWHP on a hot day 265 on the mph/weight chart |
On the street i keep it below 3000rpm(for gas mileage)
On the track i shift between 5800-6000, i also have some mods(13.672@101.82) |
It's true.....it really depends on your car. Except keeping it 3k or less for regular street driving will help fuel consumption and your engine.
------------------ '90 LX 5.0; 12K original miles (no sh*&); 3.55 gears; pulleys;Edelbrock Performer Heads; BBK shorties; MSD 6AL box w/ blaster 2 coil; Motorsport E303 cam; Pro-M 75mm MAF; BBK 70mm TB; Eibach spring kit; Southside welded subs; K&N cone filter charger; Hurst shifter; fiberglass turbo hood; A/C-less; rear seat-less; cat-less; 2 chamber Flos; Corbeau racing seats (fronts); 30# injectors; JMS Chip; 190 lb fp; TFS track heat Intake (12.299 @ 113) |
You can drive just fine with any mustang on the street keeping it well below 3k.
On a stock motor, i think that about 5-5300k is best. |
I've got a discussion on proper shift points on my website. Give it a read; it'll help shed some light on the mystery. All the graphs in the world don't solve it all though. There's no replacement for test & tune to find out exactly what your car, and your driving style, likes best. Just follow the URL in my sig.

As far as gas mileage goes, as long as you don't drive at WOT all the time, it doesn't matter what RPM you shift at. At part throttle, the computer will dispense as much fuel as necessary. The problem is knowing how much pedal pressure is considered WOT. If you floor it and shift at 3000 vs. aggressive part throttle and shifting at 4500, you'll get better gas mileage with the latter. There won't be much difference at all between granny driving and aggressive part throttle driving if you shift at the same RPMs. In fact, if there is, it is likely that the aggressive driving is more efficient. It also keeps the injectors cleaner.
The driving like a granny is better for carbureted cars since they don't manage fuel efficiently. This is important since I'm tired of seeing Mustang owners drive like grannies for no reason, especially if they're in front of me. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
I shift at about 6000 to about 6100. I go to about 4000 in town and get about 16-18 mpg.
I have 2.73 gears. [This message has been edited by Stang Runner (edited 06-05-2001).] |
I believe that the shift point is 5200 rpm. i heard that somewhere.

I accelerate quickly, shifting at 3k around town. Funny thing is, I also race rice while driving normal, till I notice they are floored and they think they are keeping up with me. Sometimes I have to take it to 3500rpms to win. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif I get 19-21mpg in town. I never use 5th gear unless I'm turning better than 1600rpms. About 60mph with my 2.73's.

around town i shift around 2500 and at track i have been told 5200-5300 is best for stocker. for racing it would depend on your power band as to where to shift for lowest times.
