AOD Transmission Tech Question

I'm about to change the transmission fluid in my '89 5.0. What type of transmission fluid do i put in it and how much will it take to fill it back up if I drain the pan and torque convertor? What are the best additives to put in the keep my transmission stronger longer. It is my orginal transmission and I have 150,000 miles on it with no problems yet, want to keep it that way. I've heard that Trans-x and Lucus has good additives. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks.

The only thing I can inform you on here is the Lucas Slip-Fix additive. I used it on both my Camaro and my Mustang...only 1/2 bottle each though. It made a noticeable difference in the shift firmness. I have an AOD tranny too, it's still stock currently, and for a good couple of days the Slip Fix completely stopped the slippage into second. But it started up again. The line pressure is too high and the tranny is just too worn for an additive to do much good. But it does seem to be good stuff. VERY thick.

when was the last time you changed your fluid? I've heard about people saying if you havent changed it in a long time then dont, cause the new fluid is effectively a shock to the internals and can make it wear out faster... I dont know if this is true or not... perhaps someone who knows trannies better would know.. just throwing the idea out

150k miles and no change... from what I've been told if you don't maintain it regularly then you shouldn't change it atall. Grime and slug build up in the tranny and changing the fluid will loosen some of this crap and it will clog passages and cause your tranny to burn up... requiring a rebuild. I changed my fluid alittle late(back in 1994) once and the tranny didn't last long atall.

Not to mention the tranny fluid, once it's old and broken down, has different hydraulic properties than regular fluid...I think the line pressure goes up with the new fluid.....and on top of what everyone else mentioned.... Yeah. Don't mess with it. :D
