4.11 or 3.73

Which gear is a better size to race with? I know most people get the 3.73 but is 4.11 better off the line? Also would it effcet my top speed at all?

it depends on what trans. you have in it first. If you have an automatic you would be better with 4.11's. If you have a stick shift the 3.73's may work better depending on your mods and tires (slicks, drag radials, street) 4.11's should work better as long as you can hook up. The top speed will be affected. I have 3.73's and a 5 speed and with the stock gears (2.73's) I figured the top speed with a redline of 6K rpms somewhere around 200mph, I don't remember exactly. With the 3.73's it is closer to 150mph. That is of course if you got a big and bad enough engine to pull 6K rpms with 2.73's.

Yeah, I have a stick shift. 3.73s then?

3.73's are a great all-round gear for the 5.0. I LOVE mine. Although for pure racing, I'd take 4.11's any day.

If you have or plan on getting some sticky tires, I'd say get 4.10's. If you run 4.10's on el cheapo tires you'll never stop the spinning. I have 3.73's and love them. They were already on the car when I bought it so I dont really have any basis for comparison. If I had it my way, I wuld get 4.10's and a set of et streets and call it a day.

3.73's if you are gona drive on the highway or interstate much or if traction is gona be an issue. What kind of roads do you do most of your driving on? What are your intentions for the car? daily driver, strip mostly, or both?

88GT 5pt0 06-19-2003 08:42 PM

both, until I get a new daily driver

Then I'd personally go with 3.73's That is what mine has and it dosen't take it but a second to get through first gear..that's if I can get it to hook up.

whats hook up?

For you, 3.73's would be perfect.

:)

Take care,

ummm......yeah, but incase i wasn't kidding, whats it mean?

Coupe50h 06-20-2003 04:50 AM

well you ever seen a pic of a mustang, or any car, with the front end up in the air, and the rear tire looks flattened, kinda wrinkled? well that car is 'hooking' up with 100% traction.

'hooking' in hotrodding language= traction
:)

88GT 5pt0 06-20-2003 12:23 PM

So basiclly its getting the best possible launch?

'89GTStang 06-23-2003 12:39 AM

Hooking up is being able to floor the car with out the tires spinning or even better yet dump the clutch at 5000 rpm and not spin the tires (or break anything). In my car even if I roll onto the gas pedel it will only hook up (not spin) on really grippy surfaces, but it just has street tires (potenza re-910's) nothing special. so basically unless you got slicks or good set of drag radials 4.10's woulden't really help much.
