50 HP Cam Swap? Replace E303 with Comp XE270
I've had the E303 for the past several years and going kinda slow for my combination. I was trapping at only 115 mph when I thought it should be closer to 120.
Finally, a few buddies told me my cam was holding me back. So this morning I call Comp Cams. So I had a long discussion with "Mark" from Comp Cams. Mark is their Ford expert and designs cams for NMRA and LaRocca. Mark said my existing cam, the E303, was not very good for my application, mainly because its single pattern and the events are not optimal for forced induction. Mark said the XE270 cam has about the same lift but significantly different phasing. He gave an estimate for the level of power to be gained: 35-40 HP from gaining 2-3 psi of boost that I'm losing with the E303 10 HP gain from the new cam that would normally be gained "on the motor" In total, that's 50 HP. Now, I'm skeptical but Mark really seemed to know what he was saying. He didn't want to give a power estimate at first, but we talked for a long time and he eventually provided what he felt was a reasonable number. Mark said you really don't get this gain on an engine that's naturally aspirated, but for forced induction, the E303 is really far from ideal. Is this possible? |
I dont see why not. A naturally aspirated LS1 went from 315RWHP to 400RWHP with a cam change and exhaust.
This is a verified fact, |
One thing is for sure, and thats the e cam is not a good choice for forced induction. 50 hp gain to be had from a cam swap....maybe....maybe not...cant hurt to try though. You should see some gains even if 50 hp is an optimistic estimate.
