Anyone running HV oil pump in stock pan?
Is anyone running a HV oil pump in the stock oil pan. I installed my oil pump tonight and went to install the oil pan and the pump hits the bottom of the oil pan.
I later read in the instructions that a HV pump may cause interference problems with the pan and that mods might be needed to make it work. I was just wondering if anyone else ran into this problem before. I think I'm going to send the pump back to Summit and tell them I want a standard oil pump. |
I got a rebuild kit from P.A.W with a melling HV oil pump and I had absolutely no problems whatsoever. I guess I got lucky

im guessing you talking about the pickup hitting the pan right? im building a 331 stroker with a melling pump. When i tried to install the pan it hit the bottom of the pickup screen so i had to clearance the pan and the screen a little. Not that much of a big deal. Use a rubber mallet and clearance the pan from the inside out and try to slightly bend the pickup upwards towards the crank. just be careful not to break anything. Hope this helps

The pickup is not the problem, it's the pump itself.
It's the part of the pump where the gears are that don't fit into the front sump. Somebody really hacked up this oil pan before. The cut the pan in half length wise and re-welded it together(for some reason). They also cut a hole in the front sump and made it deeper so they could get the oil pump to fit. Bottom line is that someone realized the pan they had wouldn't work in a mustang so they "made" it work. I went to AUTOZONE tonight and took a standard pump home to see how it fits and it just fits into the "rigged" front sump. I'm going to price some 351w oil pans from FRPP and do it right this time. |

oil problems
I have a factory 351w double hump pan and dipstick if your interested. I read an article about your problem, The person said all they had to do to there pan was to cut the front drain plug down and weld a corner to the pan to clear the pump housing.

i had the same probl. when i put in a melling HV oil pump in my 89 5.0 w a stock pan. after ruining 1 pan i noticed that at the bottom
of the oil pump cover that the 4 bolts for the cover had a much larger head on them comming in contact w/ the pan so i used the 4 smaller head bolts off the original oil pump cover & it went on fine. its that easy. just use the smaller head bolts & put that sucka back together! |
Hmmm.........interesting but I noticed that my pan is wharoed so I'm buying the right oil pan that should have been used in the first place.
Thanks for the info though |
you have the right pan dude. it the oil pump cover bolts that are the probl;em. this happened w/ my stock 83 gt oil pan & a used 92 oil pan & they were both the correct pans, i am very familiar w/ oil pans etc.... use the smaller bolts from the stock oil pump. its 2 minutes worth of work, you dont need to remove the pump from the engine & its a hell of alot cheaper.:D good luck bro-

You don't understand....I don't have the right oil pan. I have an oil pan that somebodymade work. It's a regular oil pan that somebody cut the front out of and welded a corner to make it deeper to clear the oil pump. There were too cheap to buy a 351w swap pan for a '79-93 mustang.
Besides that, it's warped anyway so it's no good. I want the correct pan for a '79-93 mustang with a 351w. |
ah ha, now i understand, my bad-sorry.
