Zoom or Ford Racing clutch assembly?
I'm planning on installing a Zoom clutch assembly and BBK adjustable cable on the '92 GT. gonna resurface flywheel. I have heard most of the arguments for which is the best clutch brand, but I'm not looking for the "best". I just want something that'll hold up well for a long time and be able to take a beating every once in a while.
So I just wanted to see if there were any STRONG objections to the Zoom clutch, if not, I'm going with that one. I heard Certerforce was great but I'm not spending nearly $300 for it. Zoom and FOrd Racing clutch assemblies were the closest in price for about $169-$189. If you had to choose between FOrd Racing and Zoom, from EXPERIENCE you had with one or the other or BOTH, which would you use? THanks. |
I don't know if all of the Ford clutches are the same, but when I drove my friends Stang he had the 11" King Cobra clutch and the pedal was much lighter than mine is.
I think that applies to any of the HD and up clutches. For that reason I plan on buying one when I change my clutch, but I don't know anything about the Zoom clutches so maybe they are like that too. The grip seemed really good, although he had stock size tires so they were most likely the weakest link. He was pushing probably 350-400hp through it without a problem. Before I drove it he had a supercharger on it and it seemed to handle that pretty well also. Good luck, Rich D. |
i cant say enuff good things about the cobra and king cobra clutches..i had one in my car that was beet the snot out of for 4-5 years..im talking decent power, sticky tires, 3 tanyy's and 2 motors and still kept ticking till i got a major oil leak and i thought it was going so i bought a CFDF2 :( but it turned out i just had oil on it so i changed it and i hated the CF so much..they suck!
ok but mid 11's 1.5 60 fts on that $160 clutch sound good:D |
Thanks for your replies, guys.
See the reason I am kinda looking away from the King Cobra clutch is that I've heard (more than once) that it is real hard to engage and disengage (pushing the clutch down). Like you gotta go and workout at the gym b4 you'd be able to push that clutch down. Has anyone experienced this with the KC clutch? I have heard a lot of good things about them otherwise, though. And the price does seem to be within my $$ range. |
Like I said, the Cobra was EASIER to disengage/engage than my stock clutch.
I have also heard from others that the Cobra's need less pedal effort over stock. I know it contradicts what you have heard, but I have experienced it myself and have wanted that clutch ever since the first time I pushed the pedal. I almost kicked it through the floorboard it was so easy. HTH, Rich D. |
Crap, how did I miss that?? Sorry richd, thanks for your honesty. I guess I'll have to reconsider the KC clutch.

We've had great luck with the FRPP HD clutches out here. We tried a zoom clutch on one of our cars last summer, and it came out two weeks later, fried. Didn't hold up.
Go with the FRPP product... my .02 |
I have a FMS HD clutch assy. and have been beatin on it for 5 years now. Gettin about time to replace it but is still lockin up pretty good. And by the way the past two years it has been drowning in oil. the pedal feel is just a lil bit heavier than stock but not bad. you will need a aftermarket quadrant for almost any new clutch you get though.
