514 questions?
Well the 5.0 in my 82 just bit the bullet and ive kinda decided that instead of building it up AGAIN that im just going to go BIG. Ive started looking into the different 460 stroker motors out there. Its probably gonna wind up being the 514. My question is besides the obvious things like headers, oil pan, motor mounts, and tranny stuff what all am i looking at. Has anyone done a 460 swap? Im going into the shop tommorow to get a working plan together and see where things are going to stand. So basically im just looking to find out any engine or transmission related problems that might arise. Its a 1982 Mustang GT. Ill be going with a C6 auto. Lets hear what you guys can tell me.

clearance
first thing that comes to my mind..is will the hood clear with a decent intake on the 460?

For now its probably gonna go without a hood. The factory hood has a factory hood scoop cut out but im not sure if it will clear. I might have to look into getting a cowl hood made for it.

Go to http://www.mmjax.com Go to message board and ask for Tony G to give you a hand. He has a 514 in his and it runs low 9s in very clean and show worthy installation. And ask him what color the is(just for fun)

that's a awful lot of weight on the front of that car. Have you considered a 351W based stroker like a 408 cid?
There are a lot more performance parts out there for the 351W than there are for the 460 -Josh, aka the tireburner |
I am doing the same thing put with just a 429. I have a 4 inch cowl hood and I am not sure that will even work with my Weiand Sleath Intake and a 850 Carb. Unless i run like a one inch air filter. I have been reseaching and i have not found any problems that anyone else has ran into. Pretty much after you change the oil pan, motor mounts, and headers its suposed to go right in. I havn't done it yet because i'm 17 and am running out of money. Put let me know what you find

Im 21 and running low on money too. lol. Basically the plan is to first work on just getting a 460 in there and then ill start working it over and building it up till i hit my 514.

It is a lot of weight, but if you are just wanting to make it a drag racer...I say go with it. If you want it to handle great in the corners.....that is a different story.

The first thing that comes to my mind are the springs. You are going to need heavier springs up front or your front air dam will become a snow plow........LOL
|
I still want it to handle half *** decent but even if i keep the 302 its gonna drop the front sway bar. Its mostly going to be geared towards drag racing since thats what it has mostly been anyways.

Yes it will fit under the hood with a stock scoop..

A big bloc kcar with aluminum heads and aluinum intake is just a few more pounds than a stock 5.0 with stock heads. I cant remember the exact weight differences but its not as much as you think.. My car and my best friends 460 car both have stock springs.. He has aluminum heads and intake and his actually sits a little high IMO. I have stock V6 springs with iron heads and intake and its JUST RIGHT

There's no way in hell that he's going to be able to use that stock hood with a 460 under there. |

im 21 and AM out of money LOL
i say forget the whole 460/514 idea..just go with a 351 based stroker...lighter so it will handle decent and alot more parts availible...you could go up to a 427...iv always thought it would be cool to say "yea..i have a 427 in my car" but anyway...im JUST about done with my 410 and thats taken alot of money and time...and i imagine something like a 514 would be ALOT worse...when the motor gets bigger..everything else has to be bigger also...and we all know the bigger the parts the more expensive .....and it dosnt sound like you have a BIG wallet :D |
The whole idea of this is to do it in stages.
First off find a good running 460 and c6 and just work on getting that in and running. Then i can start buying parts and put them on the 460. And once everything else is done buy the stroker kit and crank up the cubes. |
Why don't you just find a 302 from the junkyard and stick in there, that way you can at least drive it and then find your 460 and C-6 and slowly build that up to the way you want it.
I agree with other people on here though. I would build a 351w based motor becuse of the available aftermarket parts and less cost to build than a big block. You will be able to make, as much, if not more power than a 514 with the same amount of money you have to spend. If you really want a torque monster, then how about building a 351c. If you don't care how long the project takes or how much money it takes then go for the 514. Sit down and make a parts list for all your options and then decide which engine would be better for you to build for the amount of cash you have or lack there of. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you keep all the original parts from that '82GT of yours or you will regret it later on...especially that hood! |
Here is another car with a stock hood and a scoop. This is my best friends car it has a Performer RPM intake, 750 Carb and the air cleaner element seals against the bottom of the scoop no need for a lid This hood is currently on my car with a stock intake..
Well poop I cant repost a pic Ive already posted. If yo uwil ltake the time to do a search for a thread started by me with the title "Photoshop request" you will find pics of the car . Its an 86 Coupe with Pro stars. |
go with the big block... I was going to go with the 514, but the 557 stroker kit isnt much more...
big blocks AREN'T more expensive, the stock 460 2 bolt block will handle 600-650HP.. you can make good HP with a set of factory iron heads.. or you can use the e'brocks.. they arent that much $$ really .. couple places to check out.. http://fordifiedracing.homestead.com/bigblockfox.html http://www.network54.com/Forum/85220 |
ram air
off the subject, but coupedevil, did you say you have your set up as a functional ram air of sorts? No lid on the air cleaner? can you go in to detail on this and maybe post some pics of this? Thanks
Go with the big block.....be very cool....more money possibly for the parts, but more gain from each one also. Ryan |
