Could my EGR be my problem
I had my car dyno tuned about a year ago and the tech disabled my EGR on my Chip. Ever since the car's Idle seems to surge every so often when in park or neutral. It never did this before he disabled it.
Could this be the cause of the surging? I'm having it re enabled on Saturday as well as a re tune. The air/fuel ratio seems fine. Please help. Thanks, Tony |
I think it could be. I have the same problem with my car amung others. Im changing the EGR and the idle control sensor this week. my car surges when on the highway, doesnt want to idle, and backfires in the intake when it is cold. Diognostics said it was the EGR, EGR vaccuum sensor, and the idle control sensor. Hope thats some help.

A quick way to check is pull the vacuum hose and plug and then take for a spin. Make sure to listen for the dreaded ping, but with your combo I doubt if it will. If that solves the problem get a small check ball and insert in vacuum line and plug it back on valve and everything will look like its hooked up

Isn't the EGR operated by vacuume? A chip wouldn't (I believe) prevent the EGR from opening and closing in normal cycle, right? So wouldn't disabling the EGR on the chip only prevent the computer from knowing when it's open or closed and adjusting for it properly?

About 2 years ago I had removed my EGR tube that connects to my passenger side header and capped it off because it kept coming loose. (I think it was because of my intake spacer.) Then about a year later is when I got the car dyno tuned. When the tuner noticed the EGR was capped off, he suggested we just disable the EGR on the chip itself. I'm not exactly sure if the chip controls the function of the EGR opening/closing but will find out this Saturday when I have it re-enabled. The problems with the surging idle and dying when I put in reverse and drive didn't start until the tuner disabled it ;-(
He originally said it was because my Lunati cam and stock tq converter weren't matched up which sounds reasonable. But now I've put on a PI 3000 converter which should match my setup, and the idle problems and it dying when I put it in gear are still there. This is why I'm hoping the problems will go away by him re enabling my EGR on Saturday. billheis, I'll try your test too when I get my car out of the shop... Thanks for the replies guys. Tony |

After you installed the PI 2800, were your shifts much softer even though you had the transgo shift kit in there??? Mine were and was wondering it that was normal. The tranny guy said it was.
I really don't drive this car much so it sits in the garage for sometimes a week at a time with the battery disconnected which has yet to help...:confused: |
Yeah, I installed the PI converter after the transgo kit had been in for a while, and it softened my shifts as well. Since the converter is "looser" and slips to a higher rpm before fluid coupling, the impact of the shift will be absorbed into the converter, if that makes since. However, the trade off of performance is more than worth getting the converter, even with softer shifts.
Actually, now I have a Lentech VB and the shifts are absolutely great. Much better product than the shift kit. --nathan |

I got my problem resolved today. The chip was configured to rich at idle. As soon as he leaned it out and dropped the idle rpms, the problem went away.

Weird cause my car never backfired... and actually never had anything to do with the EGR...

The EEC controls the EVR (EGR Vacuum Regulator) to control the EGR - it doesn't do it directly. The EGR has the EVP (EGR Valve Position sensor) on it to feed back it's postion to the EGR to close the control loop.
