friction modifier, yes or no?
 

i will be rebuilding my rear end soon and i was wondering if i should use a bottle of friction modifier or not when it goes back together, what exactly does it do anyway? it was put in when i had my gears installed a couple years ago and it seemed like it would spin both tires more often than it used to, but someone told me recently that it actually HELPS the rearend slip and not to use it, what do you guys suggest? and where can i get a good rebuild kit and what prices am i looking at, thanks alot

Friction modifier keeps the clutches in the differential from prematurely wearing out. You do want then to slip; that's the whole point of a differential. It differentiates the speed of the inside and outside wheel in a corner. If it didn't do that, you'd break parts. Then when it's under load, it locks pretty much solid for maximum traction.

Bottom line is that you need to use the modifier or you'll be replacing your diff. shortly.

ahhh i see, now what about the rebuild kit? where and how much?

At Ford dealer and about $70. The kit will come with friction modifier and it is absolutely necessary for you to soak the frictions in it for at least 15 minutes. I did it for 2 hours. Add the friction modifier to differential, too.

did you notice a good improvement when you did it?

When I did the rebuild? Yeah, it's nice and straight off the line in the rain. I can leave two really nice lines on the pavement when it's dry. No popping or grinding sounds, either.

I use redline synthetic oil in my 8.8
They say that you don't need a friction modifier with their oil. I'm runnin 4.10's in it and have had no problems. Hope this helps
