gt40 heads
what are casting marks for a GT40 head ? there's a junk yard close to me that has small block ford motors laying everywhere and i'm sure i can pickup a set cheap but need to know what i'm looking for. if the FI intake has 5.0 HO on it is there a good chance these are GT40's ? thanks for any help

If the intake says 5.0 HO they are most likely E7's. GT-40 heads came stock on 93-95 cobras and on 1st generation ford lightnings.
GT-40P's came on the 5.0 explorers. You will be able to identify the GT-40P's rather easily. The spark plug holes are straight instead of angled. |
The normal GT40's will have "GT" cast into them in various areas of the head, such as right in the front of the head near the exhuast ports. Also they will have 3 bars on the front of the head.
Here is a pic of mine where you can see the 3 bars. http://midnite.ohnoes.org/~midnite/after1.JPG |
man, you guys are great, i really appreciate the info. gonna make a day long trip to the junk yard. i'm new to the ford hi performance stuff. i just purchased a 95 GT with a 5 speed.

96 and early 97 explorers also have the GT-40's. The explorer intakes are a good piece too but most junkyards do know what these things are worth, so be prepared.

The explorer gt40's are different as dark already mentioned. Usually you need new headers with them but ive heard people say that MAC long tubes bolt up to them.

95, 96, and early 97 Explorers have the GT40 heads - with the "GT" and 3 bars cast into them. The GT40P heads came on later 97 cars, had "GTP" cast into them and had four bars instead of the the three shown in that pick.
