351w in Fox ??
I'm looking at getting my play toy debating on either first gen stang 70 or earlier, or a fox body.
If I go with a foxbody, I would like to get a notchback and drop a stroked 351 in it. This will not be a daily driver - but I do want it street legal in Virginia, requires emissions etc. Can all the smog stuff be put on a stroked 351? |
reverse rotation pump...
I know the serpentine belt on 351's runs opposite of a fox 302. That's really the only pita about 351 drop in's. You can't use 302 accessories. Or at least not without some creativity.
So, you 'd just have to do some hunting around to get the accessories. I think the stock emissions crossover tube on the back of the heads might just be a little short. But everything else has a hose or is flexible enough to be adapted to a 351. |
i used my whole serpentine belt setup from my 302...i think the belt got a little longer. yes except for the exhaust crossover you should be able to use all your emissions. If they aren't gonna open the hood you don't need half of it anyway, but if your combo's radical, i don't care how much smog shit you have you MAY have problems passing the sniffer. (man am i glad they did away with that stuff)!

Holy sh@t
DirtKing,
Man, 358 w/ 12.5 to 1 compression? On a daily driver too? That's inspirational. What are your hp/torque numbers? I am thinking about a stroker 302 or 351. Selling my supercharger and want a nice clean engine bay. I am going to be commuting severa (3-4) thousand miles a month for a while and don't want supercharger issues. Belts, etc... I would like displacement horsepower and as much reliability as possible. Looking for 450 at the rear wheels. I was originally thinking a 347 with 10.5 to 1 might get me there. I can handle a little oil consumption associated with the intrusion into the oil ring. Thanks. |
actually my motor is 11.2:1, sorry about that. It engine dynoed at 550hp @ 6900 and 495 ftlbs of torque @ 5800. That was with 1 5/8th headers....we couldn't use my 1 3/4's because they interfered with the engine dyno stand. The motor made the best power at 31 degrees of total timing. I'll post the new chassis dyno numbers as soon as can. I'd stick to the 351 vs 347, but then obviously im biased :)

What did you have to change to drop the 351w into your stang? What numbers do you expect from chassis dyno for RWHP and T? |
heres a pretty good article from right here on the site:http://www.mustangworks.com/articles...n/351swap.html
i used my 5.0 fluidamper so i didn't need the 351w damper and spacer. You need a oil pan, intake manifold and distributor, and headers to do the swap. maybe a couple of other parts... Well, i advanced the cam 4 degrees after shutting the dyno run down early(at 7200rpm). I'm hoping that will lower my max hp rpm to 7500 (or lower). I'm really hoping to see 500 rwhp, but that's optimistic. I WILL see 450 rwhp unless something breaks(God forbid). I don't know that torque will increase much if any going from a 1 5/8 to 1 3/4 header, but it is possible. Im probably a month from the chassis dyno. That torque number is wrong: my best torque was 465 @ 5600 fyi |
Mustang_289 What part of VA are you from? VA laws suck, you can't do anything to a car here!
|
im from Minnesota! you know, the great white north
|
Mean50 - I agree, one thing I'm looking to do for this very reason is a first gen Mustang where I don't have to deal with the emmission crap.
We're in the Northern VA area |
VA laws suck so bad. I am from the soutwest corner of the state. VA troopers love to pick on the mustangs.
|
Yeah - I'd love to pickup a foxbody, drop a stroked 351w in it, but I also want to drive it on the road. But not sure if the screwy laws in VA will allow it.
