ported gt40's and stock camshaft

hey guys and girls. i have the opportunity to buy a ported set of gt40 cylinder heads for $500. i was wondering how much horsepower and torque i would make with the stock camshaft and 1.72 rockers, and how much horsepower and torque i would make with an e-303 camshaft. i don't know the extent of the port job yet, i'm just wondering if there would be a big difference with the e cam. thanks in advance

I dont think the e cam will make any more torque than a stock cam with 1.7 roller rockers. But the difference in HP is probably 20 so.

I agree with Dark. Above 4500 the E cam is gonna really shine vs the stock with 1.7's. As for the heads do it, you will love the way your car feels afterwords its like a whole new world.

past 4500?

i'm looking forward to it. the e-303 is supposed to have torque peak at 2500 rpm. i thought it would have more torque through 5500. but i'm not very familiar with camshafts, is there a better one i can use with automatic transmission and stock torque converter?

The E is a very good choice for your combo. The Gt40 heads and E cam work very well togheter. It may be a hair soft out of the hole but it will come on strong after that. It felt like peak torque cam about 3K when I had it in my car. Just put a gear in it and you will love it.

i have 3.73's, see my signature. thanks sedanman, i love the knowledge on here. no matter what question i have, there's always someone that knows the answer.

You'd be pleasantly surprised at what a 2,600-3,000 rpm stall converter will do for it too.

for real

i could definitely use it! darn automatics. all i'm getting with my current mods is a small tire chirp in second gear. i'm also thinking of having a manual valve-body installed so that i can enjoy 3rd gear instead of going from 2nd-4th. it sucks!

sedanman 04-11-2004 09:59 PM

Yeah a converter will do wonderful things for it. A manual valve body would be pretty cool too.

i'm sure i'll be happy with the heads for a while. a friend of mine is picking them up next month in pennsylvania.

What exactcally does a torque cpnvertor do, What is a manual valve body for? I have a shift kit in my 93' and I start in Low 1 goto Low 2 and back down to low 1. It's like shifting from first to second then low 2 is 3rd and fourth and then "O" drive. I get the same thing when I shift, but it's a hard shift at about 4000rpm and then "CHIRP" into second. I know if I had a manual tranny I could break real loose in second and chirp 3rd. I'm in debate what I want to do next. Look att my signature.

Thank for all your opinions.

They sure do.
I cant stress having good prings enough though, the stock springs are crap, unless they are already upgraded.

I just went 107 mph 1/4, on firestones, t-5, 3,160lbs, my car really doesnt have enough gear, and actually launched better/harder on slicks with a stock cam, now i can bogg it just right off the line and it holds power in the upper rpm's better with the e- cam of course.
