Tire Questions For Daily Driver
I am trying to decide which tires to go with on my 500hp daily driver. I have a handling suspension and have it lowered 1 1/2. I was going to get the Firestone Firehawk SZ50's but have been told they no longer make them. Is this true? I see the Tire Rack still has them but not sure for how long... I am also considering the Kumho ECSTA Supra 712's, the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW and the Yokohoma AVS ES100's.
I drive rain or shine so wet traction is important to me. I would also like some input as to what size would be best. I have stock Pony wheels and am currently running 245/45/16 and 245/50/16 Nitto DR in the rear. I am thinking about going with a decent handling tire all around this time. Any and all input/suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance! |
I just got the Yoko's in 245/45/17. Love them. However, they are not supposed to be used in snow. wet traction is good. price is right too. that was main reason i went with them.

I think traction is gonna be hard to find whatever tire you choose. I love my Nittos, great in the rain and good traction. I take it your looking for more mileage than the Nittos are giving?

KDW's...
I've had KDW's for 18 months and they are the baddest tire I've had.
I take on ramps at 90 (I'm not bragging, I don't street race much b/c I think it is stupid) It rains here a lot, I have never had any probs with them getting squirelly. Still plenty of tread left too. Great tire. Got mine from www.tirerack.com Good Luck.... |
Goodyear HP's or HP Ultras, they wear very well, excellent wet traction, good road feel, and quiet on the highway.
|
I had a set of Yokahama's that wore very well, although they weren't much for putting power to the pavement, which with the power you have, most tires will struggle with that.
|
I am still trying to decide but do appreciate the input guys...
Dave_mustang_50, I have been very impressed with my Nitto drag radials as far as traction goes, even bald they do decent in the rain, but you are correct and I am looking for a little more mileage, plus I would like to see how it handles with decent performance/handling tires all around. Anybody else? |
Let us know when you decide on a tire, how well they work out. I`m not sure what the mileage is but there is a new Nitto for road racing. Not sure how well they hook up though.
|
I love my regular 555 nittos, way better than my Yoko AVS's. They're cheap from discount tire direct too. I had a set of 712's and they were junk. I found myself trying to wear them out faster just to get rid of them.

Or how 'bout Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's if you want a competent all season tire (pricey though)
The Bridgestone Potenza RE750 actually out handles the BFG KDW in the wet. The KDW and the RE750 more than likely out handle the Pilot A/S since they aren't designed as all season tires my .02 |
I went with Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 245-50-16. I have no problems with em.

As someone else mentioned, the Goodyear Eagle HP Ultra Pluses are good tires. When I first got them, I could load the car up to 1200 (max. I could get on a stock stall), and put my foot to the floor and she would not break the tires. But a warning, NEVER do burnouts with these. I did and I completely destroyed the tires' traction qualities. They spin and spin and spin now. On my employee discount I paid around $140 a pop for a 245-50-16.
The 712's look like good tires, although they might not wear too long....I think they have a lower tread count. The T/A's are badass tires... |
