to the 13's

ok i purchased an 86 5.0, 5spd. my previous car was an 88 LX with an AOD, so obviously the new car being 5spd is quiker.
okay my question: what will it take for my car to find the 13's?
i just ordered a set of M/T DOT Slicks. the car is stock besides a mac 2 cat highflow hpipe, flowmaster dumps, and a K&N cone filter with the right inner headlight taken out. the timing is also advanced a bit.
i was thinking with what i have and the DOT's, the car should go 14.3's. next i was planning on purchasing roller rockers, 65mm t-body and headers. would that get me their or would i need more?

Gears, good tires and a good driver. If you drive on the highway, don't go over 3.73 gears. I have 4.10's and it screams at 70 mph. But it has great pick up in 5th gear even at 40 mph.

200k5oh 05-11-2004 08:37 PM

i actually have a set of 4.10's, but dont want to put them in because im on a stock tire right now. as far as driving on the freeway goes i do this maybe once every 2 weeks. not too much of a big deal, but i was considering trading the 4.10 for a 3.73 or 3.55.

ols0051 05-11-2004 08:43 PM

I have an off road x pipe, 1 5/8 shorty's, timing bumped, the usual msd stuff, 3.73's 5 spd, k&n. With a 3100#dry convert it goes 14.20 at 95 @ 3500ft calc.altitude. Now with a 6al powershifting hoping for a 13.99 in good conditions.

You should be right on the 13's. I was running 14.0's with just D.O.T's & underdrives when I first got the car & wasn't as good of a driver. Don't forget to ice the day lites out of the intake & take out anything that will come out easy to keep the car lite. We also put a GT in the 13's with an off road pipe, race pulleys & D.O.T's and a 240 lb. driver. You just have to dirve it like you hate it & figure out the shift point your car likes best. I would recomend getting the heads & intake from an '87 & later. What you've got, a 3.73 gear & later induction should go 13.6's -13.7's all day.

i knew about the heads being different but did not know about the intake being different. unless i can pick up an 87+ manifold for dirt ill probly just end up saving for a performer.

Stangbanger86 05-11-2004 09:32 PM

I don't think it uses a different intake, but I could be wrong.

BLACK85GT 05-11-2004 10:44 PM

From what I remember, the 86 heads were the most restrictive. Put on a nice set of heads and the car will really wake up. Also later induction as was stated above.

86GT 05-12-2004 06:43 AM

The intake is restrictive compared to the 87+ ones. They were off of the Crown Vics and had a 58mm throttle body instead of the 60mm. The easy way to check is look under the cover plate. If it has HO cast into the intake, then you've got the 87+ one, if not, get it off of there. I did that swap about 5 years ago, and it made a noticeable improvement.

Change the heads to something better too, TFS TW will fit the flat top pistons that you have, as long as you don't put a huge cam in there.

Hope that helps.

7K331 05-12-2004 07:56 PM

I'm pretty sure the intake is different. In the days when cut & ported was all there was, shops that did that would not take the '86 upper or lower as a core.

200k5oh 05-12-2004 10:14 PM

hmmm i didnt know that. thanks for the info.

yeah the twisted wedge's are what i was planning on getting, that or the jegs heads i heard were almost identicle. whats the biggest i would be able to go with a cam with those heads? i figure i can be safe with a b303.

I have seen the B-303 work, so I know its a good one for sure, but I'm told the E-303 will clear safely too. I've never actually seen it, so I'm not going to say for sure on the E-303, always check clearances to be sure. Worse case, if you got something like the E or the TFS Stage 1, you could always have the tops of the pistons notched a bit (can be done by a steady hand with a dremel if on a budget).

How'd you get the vert to weigh 3,100#????????

tmoss 05-13-2004 07:34 AM

Don't go to a 65mm TB until you upgrade the intake. You can get that 87+ intake for cheap off ebay and if you then port the lower stock intake, it will work very well up to about 260RWHP. Check the link in my signature for more info on that. If you have the money now, shop for a good used intake, an Explorer (same as Cobra) can be bought for $200-250 off ebay and used as-is for your car now, then later you can port the Explorer lower and support up to about 325RWHP with it. Performers will cost more than the Ford stuff generally, but it's a good intake.

Skip 13's. go straight to 12's:D

E303 should clear no problem with TW's. I ran my car that way a few seasons. With a performer RPM teh car ran 12.70's all day. The B303 was originally designed in the 80's. Its not bad but there are many cams designed in the past 15 years that are much better.

200k5oh 05-14-2004 08:12 PM

thank you for all the info everyone, its helpd out ALOT.

ols0051 05-14-2004 08:29 PM

That is what I got off the tracks scale, if it's real accurate? I don't know but I was going to bring it to a different scale to compare. I have taken out the ac-comp-condensor, smog pump etc, power top motor-+cylinders, and the usual, seats, spare, wipers, antenna, plus weld draglites. Then it seems that every time I take something apart I end up with a handfull of bolts. that must have helped.......
