Lock-up vs non-lockup
I'm looking at getting a 3000rpm stall converter and I was wondering everyone opinion on either a lockup or a non-lockup convertor.

I decided to go with a lockup and 4.56 gears and I am thinking that perhaps staying 3.73 with a nonlockup would have been a better idea. When the converter locks up, it devastates all meaningful performance, even when I'm running around on 4.56's! I would recommend the nonlockup if you dont choose a ridiculous stall speed and you can swallow a mpg or two loss in economy.

Non lock up is the way to go. Stronger and more performance. You will have to change your input shaft if i remember correctly.

depends on brand u want, if u r thiking of Precision...mine is lock-up 2800 stall, and they say it will handle way more power then most of us are putting down.
I notice no problems with performance by having mine as a lock up version. |
I had a precision non-lockup. Ever notice how your car "falls flat on its face" when it "locks up"?
Depending on your power output, the input shafts are a known weak spot and the non lockup uses a one piece input shaft, which is stronger. Are you going to drag race your car at all? Take it to the track? My AOD was moddified so the shift pattern was different, and I could hold second and third gear at the track without going into OD or lock up. If your mostly concerned with cruising and will do a lot of highway driving, you might want to keep lockup, but to me the extra strength was worth getting rid of it. Its all a compromise, just think about whats better for you. If your after performance more than mileage, non lock up might be your best bet. If not, consider the other way. |
