Cam Suggestions for GT40P's
Hi I have a 88 notch thats converted to mass air and i wanna use GT40p heads and intake but what cam is recommended? People say shelf cams aren't gonna get the HP i want from the motor.. Is this true? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

On a street car with GT-40P heads, you might pick up as much as 10hp by going with a custom grind cam, over a good choice in the "off the shelf" cam world. Personally, I'd rather have a more forgiving "off the shelf" cam that can deal with a few changes in the combination, cost me a lot less money, and be easier to sell if I should decide to upgrade.
You'll probably want to upgrade the valvesprings on the heads to reduce valve float, and allow you to use cams with .500+ lift at the valve. The heads also respond very well to light porting. Something like a TFS-51402000 (TFS #1) should be fine for those heads. .499/.510 221*/225* LSA 112* Don't go for a cam with a lot of lift unless the heads are worked quite a bit. The GT-40P's lose flow volume above .500 lift. |

everyone has told me that the e303 cam goes really well with the p heads. i know this because i have the e cam and p heads and i asked the same question and everyone said they go together well. along with my edelbrock performer RPM intake. :D

cenok, i agree, i use non p 40's with the e-303, works pretty good, i know another guy using this combo with p's and an aod, it goes low 13 on street tires.

I'd shoot for something in a 239/244 range at .050". Any of the alphabet cams are anemic compared to what you can get from a custom cam. I had perfect driveability, both EFI and carbureted from the same Cam Motions cam in this range with unported GT-40P heads and still cranked out more than 450hp with good idle and stability. May not pass emissions, but wasn't a concern for me at the time.

That engine was at 13:1 with the iron GT-40P's and ran great on 93 octane pump gas, even on the street. I even raced on pump gas without detonation/knock. In EFI form, I had a chip that merely turned off the emissions functions, brought in total timing by 2700 rpm and boosted the rev limiter. Full timing was at about 33-degrees. In carbureted form, I ran a locked out distributor with 34 to 36-degrees.
Point being that the alphabet cams are old-school and leave tremendous potential untapped. Why in the world wouldn't someone want to get as much performance as possible out of a component when laying down the hard earned cash. Technology moves on, in large part because of what is learned from cutting edge racing....camshafts are no different. The experience gained in the industry over the course of 10+ years has shown that you can have a performance hydraulic roller camshaft for the SBF that retains good idle, driveability, emissions performance (even if not advertised) yet provides kick-in-the-a$$ performance. Go with a good cam designer/grinder such as Anderson Ford Motorsports, Flow Tech Induction, Bennet, Cam Motion, Isky or any host of other companies. Hell, even Comp Cams has some tremendous products not even listed in their catalog, just call their tech department and ask for more. |

I've had good luck with the b cam and 1.72rr's. I just ported my exhaust runners, so that should open things up a bit.
