Flywheel question...
I just finishd converting my Capri from an AOD to a T-5, but when I started it up afterwards there was a vibration from about 1000rpm and up, it runs fine when idling. I was thinkin, did I choose the wrong flywheel, I got the Ford Racing Nr. M6375B302, with a 50 oz. counterballance. Shuld I have taken the 28 oz. one? And what about the harmonic balancer, do I have to change it?
The car is driveble but only at lower rpm's. Pleas help. :( P.S. The engine is from a '91 T-Bird. |
Re: Flywheel question...
Did you use a pilot bearing?
Ford says the 28oz. balance crankshafts stopped showing up in 1981. All 5.0's thereafter should be 50oz. How old is your balancer, see if you can see rubber coming out of the sides, very common problem and it will throw the balance off. |
Re: Flywheel question...
Make sure you have the correct balancer on engine. They will interchange.
Also, are you sure on the year?? Sure it isn't a 255?? Sounds like a miss match. Is the flywheel you got maybe marked wrong?? Did you install a pilot bearing in rear of crank?? |
Re: Flywheel question...
Yes I used the pilot bearing. The engine is a 5.0 from a 1991 T-Bird with EFI and everything.
The balancer was replaced when I replaced my 3.8 V6 for the 5.0 about 6-7 years ago. Do you think the balancer just went a little bonkers, are the OEM one's that mutch junk :p ? Quote:

Re: Flywheel question...
What I meant was, the flywheel you purchased may be boxed wrong, or weight missing. I'd check it against another.
Also, balancers...yeah sometimes they just go bad. The rubber goes bad from age. |

Do you think that from lack of use the balancer will go bad quicker, I've haven't used the car mutch the last two years, maby 4 months in all. |
Re: Flywheel question...
also check your waterpump and fan. If those are bad they sometimes wobble and cause what you are feeling.
Try removing the waterpump/fan belt and start the car for a minute just enough to see if it smooths out. If that is not it next try the harmonic balancer (79 bucks brand new 50ounce). If that is not it then it could be anything in the drivetrain from driveshaft to transmission, etc. How are the motor mounts? transmission mounts? are they new? Any of these could cause your problem. |

Is it a V8 T5?

But I dont think the gearbox is the problem. |
Re: Flywheel question...
Ok, since you are posting this following the t-5 swap, I assume you did not have this problem before the swap.
Odds are slim that something else went south at the time you did this swap. I would consider the flywheel or something in the swap is the cause of your problem. Ryan |
Re: Flywheel question...
I have seen a pressure plate cause a vibration before too. Did you get a new clutch kit? If everything was fine before the swap, it almost has to be the flywheel or the pressure plate. Even if the rubber on the harmonic balancer has deteriorated some, that will not throw the balance off. Just the timing marks. You might notice a slight vibration from this but I doubt it.

I think I'll try the balancer first (it's only $75 from Summit), but I'm gonna think about it over the Easter weekend, so post away. I hate doing this guesswork. |
Re: Flywheel question...
did you try removing the fan and waterpump belt yet? I have had a similar problem in the past and the water pump bearing was going bad and was wobbling causing a serious vibration.

And yes, it would be less expencive to buy another new flywheel than sending the old one to the US for a check out. The vibration intencifies to 2000 rpm and stays the same from that throughtout. At idle I feel no vibration. |
Re: Flywheel question...
I am almost certain that it is the flywheel or balancer. If you don't have any friends with mustangs to borrow parts from, I guess it'll be cheaper for you to buy a new balancer and try it first. Then try the flywheel. Can you post pics? If you could post some pics of the balancer and flywheel, we can tell you through pics if something is wrong with them. Then, you would only have to buy one of these.

Re: Flywheel question...
I'll take som pics of the balancer first (but I can't remove it yet), maybe I'll post a video do give you an idea how mutch it vibrates.
