engine swap 86 to 91
First off I'll ask you to be kind, I'm new at this: forums and Mustangs.
I have a 91LX 2.3 with a fairly good body, no rust, and just aquired an 86 GT with a recently rebuilt trans but a rusted out body. I plan on pulling the 5.0 out of the 86, rebuilding it and dropping it in the 91. Although I'll probably have a million questions my first two are: 1. Should I keep the Speed density system currently on the 86 motor or change it over to Mass air flow which the 2.3 liter in the 91 has? 2. When switching the engines do I need to change the EEC since the 86 is first gen and the 91 is second gen? |
Re: engine swap 86 to 91
MOST important, is what tranny was in the 86? That was Ford's transition years, from carb to S/D, and if the 86 had an auto, it was a fulie motor, that'll make the swap easier. You already mentioned S/D so I assume...... ;)
Easier to answer your second question first. YEP! First question is tough. Gonna need someone smarter than me in the fuel injection world, all I can tell you is what I would do. I'd swap the motor, computer, everything it took. GET IT RUNNING FIRST. Then figure out the S/D to M/A swap. Me personally, I'd throw a carb on it. hehehehehe That's just me. Sit tight, there's a BUNCH of guys here that can and will help you out on this!!!!! |

The 86 is a 5 speed trans, I assume a T5, and is fuel injected
