Stock timing set-backfiring
 

Ok i ordered a edelbrock cam edl-2221....and it said not compatible with late model timing set. Well i degreed it and it looked to come up fine...But now its backfiring like the timing is off! Do you guys think this is my backfiring/ acts like timing is off?? PLEASE help its killing me wondering, i ordered a new chain i just want to know before hand if you think that is what it is!

If it said it's not compatible, chances are it's not. You might have to go with a different firing order, are you sure it's backfiring and not popping from a miss?

No it shouldnt be missing, because it runs good unless it backfires, almost like the timing is off- probably meaning timing chain. My cam is the 302 non h.o. fire order. I already have the firing order right i just think it has to be that. What else could it possibly be?? I ordered a dist. to

1st, just because it's back firing, doesn't mean your timing chain is messed up . The timing chain is standard for both stock and aftermarket cams with exception to different placements of the lower cam sprocket for advancing or retarding the camshaft itself. Unless the chain is extremely stretched out, the timing issue is NOT from the chain. Did you install it straight up? You might have installed th dist 1 tooth off or at 180 degrees off, the car will run like that but not too well. Pull the dist out, set the #1 piston to TDC, you can see this with the spark plug out and a flashlight. Once it's at TDC, drop the dist in with the rotor pointing to #1. Set your timing to 10 degrees and go from there. This is the warning you are referring to most likely.

CAUTION: Use Edelbrock Performer-Link Timing Chain and Gear
Set #7811 or Accu-Drive gear drive #7892. Do not use late
model timing chain and gear sets that are designed for emissioncontrolled
engines. These timing sets are machined in a retarded
position and are not recommended for this camshaft installation.
Edelbrock Timing Sets feature three keyways for specified timing
selection. Use "0" position for most applications.

That "0" position they are referring to is the straightup position, which is going to be almost the exact same as straightup on the stock chain. Try resetting the TDC and let us know.

hey just an fyi for u if u have a efi ho motor and your useing the non ho fireing order u will have problems with popin because the injectors are firing with the ho order of 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.and not the non ho order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8...like usmc said the chain wont cause a problem unless its sloppy or not lined up right....so any ways if u do have the efi ho and u put the non ho order cam in it plan on swaping that cam out again if u want it to run right ...and to answer the question befor its asked you cant re wire the injectors it wont run right

You have a lot of good advice given above. The chain isn't your problem.

You said you degreed it....if you did and it came out OK then it isn't retarded, unless you used a different chain set to degree it then you used to run it.

Look elsewhere. Start with firing order, intake leak, etc.
