Slow '95 GT
My '95 GT auto drives like it has a slipping box. Compared with my boyfriends '89 firebird it's a real hog, (this is a major embarrassment). I've been advised by the local garage that a shift kit will make all the difference in the world. Before I go ahead and have the work done I'd like to hear other owner's opinions. Has anyone else found it to make a difference? Are the stock cars really this slow? Would a diff' upgrade be a better idea? Any advice would be greatly received.

Thanks! Considering that I am on a budget, which upgrade alone offers the biggest gain, (shift kit or gears)?

Re: Slow '95 GT
well the shift kit is prolly less than
100 plus fluid and the gears are like 190 plus new crush sleve, pinion seal, rtv.its not a bad idea to have new clutchs for the limited slip(posi)..now its about who u know that can install them.if u dont know any one that can do it will cost some money. |
Re: Slow '95 GT
I would check with a ring and pinion shop. I would think the gear change form stock to a 3:73 could be your best bang for the buck A shift kit is just going to change your stock gears faster and sharper.

Re: Slow '95 GT
Gears are the most bang for the buck to get a heavy stock SN95 auto up and going. Yes, stock they are pretty slow. If your bf's car is a 305 it shouldn't really be THAT much more impressive though. Only reason I say that is for comparison to determine whether your car is even running as well as a stock one should. 4.10 Gears, underdrive pulleys, pull silencer off of airbox, and a good flowing H or X pipe and catback will make it a little more peppy. Also, if you don't have a chip or any sort of tuner, you can set your base timing to 14 degrees of advance at the distributor and run good octane fuel.
