choosing heads for 408 stroker
Okay so as some of you may know i posted a thread about my 408 having no balls. i have done some research and decided that the heads i have are just too small ( edelbrock RPM heads, 170cc runners, 202/160 valves)
the engine is this: 408w stroker 10:1 forged pistons (with 60cc chambers, that is) crane powermax cam 224/232 @050, 540/560lift, 114lsa. this is probably all that is relevant. are my heads too small? what should i go with, i was thinking the edelbrock victor heads. would this be worth spending the money? or are the heads i have fine.. what about AFR? im looking for good power in the 2500 to 5800rpm range. currently its only making about 250rwhp on the dyno. thanks for reading. |
Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
well i would have a got a cam with a 108 lsa. witha power band to at least 6500..quick fuel 750 to 850..if u wanna get the full potential outta it u have to change alot..ur noit really set up good

Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
Its in a full size bronco, with a c6 trans (2500 stall), would you still go with 108 lsa?

Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
well what are u gonna do with it race?tow?4 wheelin?

Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
Well seeing that the truck is running now (and well broken-in) it's really kind of a moot point (especially since taxes just destroyed my savings) its not for towing or racing, or rocks, it's really just a build to go have some fun with in the sand, mud, dirt, hill climbs, desert, etc.
i really just decided the heads were too small because now that it's finished it really doesn't perform up to my expectations, and i guess i blame the heads. i probably should have gone with a big block. here's a video and a picture just for fun. Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
Wht are you running for an intake and exhaust? What are you running for a transmission?
|
Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
summit dual plane intake (its a weiand stealth clone), summit shorty headers (the cheap $150 ones, they look pretty well made though) into dual 2.5" exhaust, and the stock C-6 trans with a 2500 stall.

Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
Hmm, it is making the same power (or less)than a 302 would make with the same parts. I would evaluate the overall health of the motor before changing the heads, the C6 will suck up some power but not that much. Shorty headers on a 408 is probably a mistake but you are still way down on power. I would check all the ignition components, the timing chain, re-install the cam making sure that it is timed correctly, etc.. before spending a dime on new heads.

Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
Ive actually toubleshot it a bit since i wrote that first message (the one with the dyno numbers) and it's running considerably better now than it was then, due to a number or problems (advance not working properly, undersized fuel pump, spark plugs over gapped, etc)
it'll smoke 35's on asphalt w/o help from the brake now. i know burning rubber isnt that impressive but it's a step up from where it was. i'm going to take it to be dyno'd again soon and i'll post up the numbers when i do. im thinking it will pull in an easy 300+ rwhp now. |
Re: choosing heads for 408 stroker
How is it holding up?
For that truck I would think the heads and cam would be fine. You could run a larger head but then the cam might need to be smaller. |
