New Boss 302 Crate Engine

I have heard rumors that Ford Racing might offer a Boss 302 Crate Engine. A roller cam, 4 bolt main, non siamese, with many stroker combinations. Has anyone else heard about this?

I haven't heard anything, and I'd doubt it severely.

They junked the tooling for the 5.0 HO motors, much less the Boss 302? The last Boss 302 rolled off the assembly line as a 1970 model.

I can't imagine that Ford would resurrect the old motor. It'd have to be completely redesigned for use on the roads to meet emissions with those clevland heads, and the limited demand due to it's increased size over the standard 302 would make it a pretty small niche motor.

That being said, I'd love one to put in my car! Hehe, good thing we don't have emissions here anymore!

Yes, Ford Racing makes several GT40 long blocks. 302 or 351 pick your horsepower and your price. Check it out at:

Sure do. In several combinations, actually. Currently their best showing is the 340bhp motor w/ aluminum GT40 heads. They also sell a stroker short block that's not too shabby.

Sounds like that sportsman 302 block. Basically a tougher version of the production 5.0. I don't know if it's coming through with 4-bolt mains, but I think the main webs are solid filled versus hollow. and a few more things like that.

Wish I had a freak'n wayback machine! Or better yet a grant to start a foundry.

Always thought that a neat little cast iron block based on the 302 would be handy, but with more commonality with the 351 (oil pan, bolts, timing cover, etc). the only real change being the deck height and conrod length. Then again I guess you could always just prodcude a 351 and destroke it! Naw forget that, the 302 is a dern tiddy package unless you want more that 360 cubes (with a siamesed bore engine) Oh well maybe one day I'll have controling interst in the World Prodcuts foundry http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...board/wink.gif

The 302 "Sportsman block" sounds like ford is at least going in the right direction. Does anyone know when we will see these?

bossman-motorsports 01-24-2001 12:36 PM

I sure wish they would, but very highly unlikely. I would love to even find one of the old A4 302 blocks as it is superior to the boss block. I have a few bosses -www.bossman-motorsports.com - and am currently working on a clone 70 T/A Boss and plan on installing a stroker 302. A stroker 351W would be nicer, but wouldn't look right in a vintage racecar. At any rate, Ford is using the 2-bolt main blocks for its new series of strokers including their new 392 stroker which according to Horsepower TV, developed 452 horsepower on their dyno. I think that if Ford built a stroker based on one of the current 4-bolt castings, the costs would go up considerably and considering the fact that a lot of 5.0 guys developed ungodly horsepower from a 2 bolt block, probably isn't really needed. I am in the finishing stages of my Project 65 X-tremestang, a 1995 351W Lightning powered car developed for the Nevada Silver State Classic Challenge wherein you run all out over 90 miles of public highway. My short block was new in the crate and taken to Mark Jeffrey at Coast High Performance for the blueprint and balance and he even stated that with what I am doing to the motor, it will develop 450 to 500 horsepower at the flywheel, but should be okay even with the 2-bolt Lightning block. I do know, in talking to the Ford techs on their tech line, that Ford is continuing to develop more and more complete engines/short blocks in the stroker arena as there is definitely a market out there for them....

The production 5 litre block was rated for 550 hp. Although a few people have indicated they have exceeded this amount with no problems? DSS claims 600 hp with a main girdle. But I don't think its a problem retaining the crank in the mains. It's the hollow main webs and their inability to really take a pounding (especially when your really spike the loads via nitrous

If Ford would put together an A4 shortblock stroker combo at a reasonable price I don't think they could make these things fast enough. I have seen the standard 5.0 put out over 500hp, but these just don't last very long. With supercharger & turbo along with the better cly head technology we need a better block. The R302 won't work on the street and cost tooo much.
