Do I need the heavy metal thing that hangs over my diff ??? What's it used for???

could you be more specific? I think I know what you are talking about, and I think the answer is yes. Keep in mind that I am not totally sure of what you are referring to. Is it like a torque arm or something?

Also, if you want to lose a quick 10 lbs, look under your front end, you will see this UNNESSACARY piece of metal streching across the front of the car, from wheel to wheel(so to speak). It connects to the frame, but carries no load, or structural advantage. (I think I said that right) Anyway, let me know more about this piece and I'll help as much as I can.

it's about 7 in long and 3 in wide and it sits on top of the diff. I think it's for balance for stock gears but I if I remember right I was told when we change rear end gears, we don't need it anymore ????????????

Nope. After you change gears you don't need it. It's a vibration dampner or something for the stock gears.
