clutch wearing out??
I've got 78k on my 1990 5.0; mostly highway miles to work. clutch appears to be slipping a little. how long should i expect original to last with highway miles? what's a good replacement? stock ford or get a heavier duty one? thanks

The stock Ford clutch is a good quality piece and can last a long time but you can also kill it in 20,000 miles if you really try. It varies by driving style.
My stock clutch lasted almost 90,000 miles (yes, I raced it) and still had a little left when I replaced it. I replaced with the Ford King Cobra HD clutch and have had zero problems with it. Good clutch for all-around driving; light pedal effort too. I recommend it. I also replaced the flywheel to avoid problems, but I'm a perfectionist. |
thanks. how much for new King Cobra, pressure plate and throw out bearing installed?
|
The King Cobra clutch & PP cost about $200.
Release ('throwout') bearing is about $35., clutch pilot bearing is $15. Total: $250. Installation is about 2 - 2 1/2 hours as the transmission has to be removed/replaced. Most mechanics charge from $50 - $60. per hour. Be sure to have the rear main seal gasket replaced at the same time (they all leak, eventually). The seal is $15. $400. - $450. should cover the entire job depending on where you buy the parts (I use Mustangs Unlimited) and how much the installation costs. Simple job for a pro. |
