Cobra, Edlebrock, GT40, Mac, Explorer Intakes
Hi,
I suddenly got interested in intakes, and want to know whether it's worth going with either of these intakes, and what kind of HP/TQ increase I would see, and how much they cost: Cobra, Edlebrock, GT40, and late-model Explorer intakes, Mac (coming soon). Or if I could save my money for something else. Also if it's worth buying a used 97-xx Explorer 5.0L intake. I've read about how it's easy to bolt these heads on (with a few modifications). My car: 89 5.0L, practically stock engine, and I live in Ontario, Canada where they have emission laws. Thanks! Bye! ------------------ Gautam N. A Cobra or Edelbrock will be around $800.00 (Cdn$). I don't think these intakes will gain you very much on an otherwise "mostly stock" engine.
You may be better off porting your stock intake. (J&P does this for around $300.00, but they are backed up until June in the porting department) ------------------ 91 coupe 3.73's,long tubes,2 1/2" exh, ported stock t-body,ProM-77mm cobra intake, edelbrock heads,B303,1.72 rr's 36lb inj's,tremec, & a Paxton NOVI 2000!!! 11.020 @128.95 on BFG Drag Radials (275/60/15) |
It won't benifit you much now but it would be a good base to go on.Any of the intakes you mention are good so it doesn't matter which one you pick just tell a shop what you want to do and they'll help you pick out the better one for your planned mods

I would wait for the mac, the best for the price...then you can tell us how u like it, because im thinking of getting one myself

Hi,
Hmm, $300CDN sounds like a good deal. I might consider it. My car had gears, cam and exhaust system done by J&P I think (or maybe just gears). Ok, so if there are no MAJOR gains in HP/TQ, then what exactly is the point of a bigger intake? Is it so it will let me run at higher RPMs? Does it provide peak HP/TQ at higher RPMs (rather then stock HP @ 4300RPM and TQ @ 3000RPM)? What are the advantages of that? I dunno... Thanks! Bye! ------------------ Gautam N. TO realize the benefit of the intake, you really need heads that will flow too!
I'd start with an underdrive crank pulley, hi-flow cat pipe, and an electric fan (SN95 or MarkVIII... got mine from the wrecker for $50... you just need to wire up a controller). ------------------ '89.5 5L LX, hatch, Medium Canyon Red, 155K Km (No winters), 5sp, 3.08, GT interior, a/c, Alpine CD, K/N, Crane PS91, Walbro 190 LPH, March Pulleys, Mr. Gasket 180 therm (HP balanced), 3 core rad, MarkVIII fan, Variflow controller, Polygraphite front bushings, FMS-5300B springs, 6 KYB's, 73mm Calipers, Maximum Motorsport 4pt chassis brace, Western Motorsport Racing's Sub-frame connectors. Re-ringed bottom end, conv. motor mounts, melling oil pump, FMS-C50 waterpump, GT40P heads (blended, polli |
Intake swap is only worth 7-10 hp.
Used cobra can be had for about $300 US probably about $400 can. Save for the heads, or nitrous, or gears ------------------ 4.10's,long tubes & 75 shot...Goes 12.50's Check it out at http://www.burnouts.webprovider.com |
