How hard is it to weld torque boxes?
I'm thinking about new control arms and while I'm doing that might as well reinforce the torque boxes. How hard is it to weld those things - especially the uppers?

Do you have any experience with a smoke wrench? If you've done any automotive welding before, it should be prettystraight forward. I've never done it before but I've seen it done and it looked pretty basic. The pain in the @ss is all the security and fire hazard precautions.

Not to sound stupid, but my only welding experience so far is some welding I've done on my Jeep. When you're saying security and fire protection, I assume you're talking about pulling insulation from inside the car. What else, do I need to pull the gas tank? Maybe I'm better off taking this in somewhere.

welding up the torque boxes is a piece of cake. I just did this mod on my 78 Fairmont here at school. The biggest pain is getting the whole rear end and control arms out. Just make sure you have clean metal and the gaps arent too big. I used a torch and a wire brush to clean off the sheetmetal, much easier than trying to sand it. 110V mig welders work best. If you stich weld technique you shouldnt have to worry about setting the inside of the car on fire. GOOD LUCK
