Post Project White Turd - 1.5MPH Increase with Catback!

Well, its been a long time since I made a posting regarding my 246K mile motor and I ran my best time ever tonight with it. You will be surprised to see how much it picked up with a Dynomax 2.5" Catback with Super Turbos. The catback replaced a non-mandrel bent 2.25" system with 2-chamber flows.
Here's some history on this car:

1989 White LX Hatchback
302ci 246,000 mile shortblock
Ported Stock Heads retaining stock valves
GT-40 Intake (lower cleaned up a bit)
Stock MAF and Throttle Body
Stock Cam
180deg Thermostat
K&N Conical Filter
Crank Underdrive Pulley
1 5/8 Equal Shorties
2.5" Mac Prochamber
2.5" Dynomax Catback w/Super Turbos
Stock 2.73 gears
5 Speed Manual
3365lbs Weight

Previous best in car:
14.15@98.12 (2.06 60ft)
73 deg F
30.01 Barometer
45% Humidity

New Best with catback:
14.008@99.51 (2.053 60ft)
83 deg F
29.98 Barometer
60% Humidity

The car picked up nearly 1.5MPH with a damn catback!! Man, I can't wait to uncork the TB and MAF. I really think I will find another 1.5-2MPH. And with a gear and some traction, this puppy could be running low-mid 13s !!

Now I know a lot of you may be thinking, 14s under a 100mph, big woopie. A compression test revealed a highest compression of 135psi in one cylinder while the average among then was around 127psi and the lowest was 91psi. I really think this car with a fresh shortblock is capable of turning 102-103mph trap speeds with the current mods. With a fresh shortblock, I think 105-106mph isnt completely out of the question.

What's everyone else think? Am I being too optimistic here? Am I happy over nothing or is my tired shortblock performing pretty decent given the mods?

Thanks,
Tony

Thumbs up

It's all good. Next I'd say to throw in a set of gears...you'll reduce another 3-4 tenths easily.

I can't believe the miles you have on your short block. That's a testimony to Ford's durability. From your compression test, it sounds like you'll need to freshen it up pretty soon.

DAMN!!!!!! That is a lot of miles! with that compression test, you will need to rebuild pretty soon. My plan is to drive my shortblock till its dead, and then swap it out with a 351, that'll be a great day!

Now thats something that should make all of us proud to drive Fords, let alone Mustangs!!! I think that says something for keeping up with regular maintenance. Congrats and good luck with that beast, maybe you'll make it to 300K, but I doubt it with that poor of a showing in the compression category. I would be excited, we all need goals, and looks like you might make it.
