Pull the tranny or lift the block?

Hey guys, I noticed that my rear main seal is leaking on the '79 so I gotta get my lazy butt out there and correct this problem b4 it gets too cold out there.

What I found out that I don't know, though, is if the rear main seal on the pan on the '87 351W block is separate from the pan gasket or not. Will I be able to just pull the tranny and change the rear main seal or will I end up having to unbolt the motor mounts and lift the engine and replace the entire seal/gasket? It's not leaking anywhere else (is totally dry all the way around the pan except the back).

Well if its the actual rear main seal your going to have to figure out if its a one piece rear main or a 2 piece. If its one piece you can probably pull the yranny and do it through the back otherwise your going to have to drop the pan and pull the pan.

Thanks for replying.

Cool. Found out it's a one piece so I can just pull the tranny and flywheel. ;)
