Default Pulled engine last night...PICS

Last night I pulled the engine and transmission out of my '91 LX. It went pretty smoothly overall. I couldn't believe how rusted out the transmission crossbrace was! Anyway, here is some more info and pics...no use posting it twice:

That crossmember is NASTY! Over here in Ohio, the state started spraying the roads with a liquid brine type stuff to melt the ice, and it's HORRIBLE on our cars. My nieces oil filter rusted through because of this stuff, Bro-in-law's Ranger is all nasty underneath too.

NY using this brine crap too?

Oh man that stinks. Can't believe teh oil filter rusted through. I wouldn't think it would even be on the car long enough to rust.

[threadjack]

Jester, they've been using salt up here in the Love Glove (aka Michigan) for a long-arse time, at least in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula. It's definitely a PITA when a motorist is merely trying to keep his car in decent shape, but has to drive through this crap. It's about as bad as an acid bath. [insert conspiracy theory here about the Michigan DOT, Detroit auto industry, and oil] The funny part is that they don't use it up in the Upper Peninsula! It's too freak-in' cold for salt to work. They have some OLD vehicles up there, I'm not kidding. It's not uncommon to see 4x4 trucks from the 70's in near-new condition. Shoutout to Ishpeming, eh?

[/threadjack]

I hate to "brag," but that's not really that bad as far as rust goes; my crossmember supports were almost GONE when I removed my drivetrain three weeks ago. He's lucky that the floorboards aren't rusted at the seams like mine, either. I'm gonna be welding in new pieces so my feet don't get wet! Good thing FRPP has a virtually never-ending supply of those double-humpers.

I8URVTEC: isn't it like Christmas morning when you were a kid when that engine is finally suspended over the hoodline?!? It's like, "YES!!!!" FWIW, I hope you're working in a nice, warm garage. It's now snowing like a SOB here in GR, and I know how it gets out there in OC, NY. Good luck.

Yea, it was real cold last night and I don't have a heater in the garage. It is detached from the house. But I still managed to work up a sweat getting that engine out. You are right though...it is the best feeling when you finally get the engine and transmission all the way out of the engine bay!

ODOT [Instert conspiracy theory with MDOT here] has been using "salt/slag" for years. It was bad on the cars at best. But now, this brine crap!

It's not that the oil filter was on the car so looooong a time, it wasn't even due for it's next oil change when it rusted through! That's how bad this crap is! A chunk of salt is bad enough, but at least it'll bounce off of the car. LIQUID salt hangs on and makes a complete mess of things!

FWIW, there is a special tool you could have bought to disconnect those fuel lines you had to cut.

Yea, unfortunatly I found that out way to late. We had the engine on the hoist and all disconnected and realized those were still connected. No time to run out and get the tool so I cut them. Rookie mistake not disconnecting them earlier. Anyway, I will probably need new lines anyway b/c I am most likely going to do a fuel cell and possibly different engine altogether.

I COMPLETELY understand that...cut now and worry about it later. Yep, been there....done that!

Seeing as how this is my first time doing a project this big I am sure I am going to run into a lot of things later on that I wish I had done right the first time. Just have to chalk it up to experience I guess.
