pulley question
last week my alternator went bad so since i will replacing it and my belts i think i will just go ahead and install some aftermarket pulleys. my question is whether or not to install the larger alternator pulley. i have have heard of people having problems with the electrical system. infact my friend had trouble on his 96 S-10. just want some ideas on what you guys have installed and how they have worked, and what brand of pulleys did you go with.
Thanks for the help ! Eric |

The March "Power and Amp" pulleys ensure full charge at idle. Mine are aluminum, part no. 2015, but you can get them in steel for a little cheaper.
If you already have a 130 amp alternator, you don't have to worry about pulleys affecting charging. I believe the 130 amp alternators were equipped on '94 and later stangs. I'm having problems keeping my new battery charged with an Advnace Auto stock replacement alternator using the March pulleys. I think the part number is 2010. The engine is running hot too.

I have a 130 amp alternator, but left the alt. pulley off, and have noticed no change in performance. I still have a lower charge at idle 750 rpm, especially with the lights and fan on, and I fear with a pulley on the amp it will be lower. Btw, I have auto specialties pulleys.

I have the March Aluminum 3-piece set (not the power amp set), and I had major charging problems (killed 2 alternators and 2 batteries in 2 years), and I would swear that my fuel pump made strange noises too. I ugraded to the 3G alt and left the stock alt pulley - for the last 3 years NO problems whatsoever. I am sure the 3G made most of the difference, but the alt pulley played a role too.

What do you mean by 3G alternator? Is it a higher amp rating? I checked my pulleys and for sure they're a performance piece rather than the Power and Amp series. Dammit! Now I either need a new set of pulleys or a better alternator, or both. Maybe just returning the pulleys for the Power and Amp set would help? I can't even get the alternator to charge the battery. I went for 1 ride last night and the battery was dead by the time I got to the gas station...and it's a new battery.

the 3g (third generation) alternator is a step op from what was put on fox bodies (a 75 amp), and it is the same thing as a 130 amper, i think. the thing with pulleys is that if you put on the crank pulley, it affects EVERYTHING. whether you put on the alt pulley or not, it doesn't make that much difference, the crank pulley is the biggest change.
