Default Putting in new clutch. Anything left out?

I am finally going to put in my new clutch. My 85 still has its original clutch. I got FM King Cobra. I got a new flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, clutch fork and cable. I got the cluthc pilot tool, all new arp bolts.

My question is, should I get a new pilot bearing. If so, any recommendations on where to get it or what brand.

Another question. I heard this is a good time to replace the rear main seal. I heard that some have a 1 peice and some have a 2 piece seal. Does anyone know which it is for an 85 GT.

Is there anything I am leaving out. BTW I'm doing it myself for the first time. Any tips would be appreciate. No matter how much I prepare for something I've never done before I always seem to run into something I wasn't expecting.

I did my first ever clutch this year. (Had many C-4 bouts, but nver a clutch).

Anyways, DEFNINITELY get ALL new parts. You only wanna do the job once.

For my Tremec TKO install, I went with D&D (local to Detroit) and picked up new pilot/throwout, and HD fork, and RAM clutch and PP and flywheel...

Some install photos off my homepage.

Sounds like you are well on your way. Don't forget a can of brake parts cleaner. You'll need that after getting everything in place to clean off all fingerprints, etc.

I did my first clutch job when installing my new Tremec 3550 this summer. It was easier than I thought.

Make sure that when you tighten down the pressure plate bolts to do them in a crossing pattern over several times. Definately use a torque wrentch in order to attain the proper ft/lbs. The clutch alingment tool is a must as well. I replaced my rear main seal when I was in there too. I am not sure about whether yours is a 2 piece or not. You may want to consult a Chiltons manual or call your local Ford dealer.

I didn't replace my throw-put bearing since I only have 39,000 miles on my Stang - plus I've heard that they are a pain in the rear to take out.

Good luck and let us know how it goes or if you have any other questions.

Replace your pilot bearing and throwout bearing while the tranny is out. S.K.F. is an excellent brand but i am sure there are many more out there. Your local Ford dealer will have the bearings but you may pay a premium price for them. Your car will have the one piece seal. I believe the 302's have used the one piece since 1982 ( ? ) But i'm sure all the roller blocks had them.

U need to replace your Bearings everytime. Your pilot bearing may look good, but if it does go out, u have to tear out everything again. It's cheep, and not too hard to replace. Don't worry about the old one, just pry it out. There are also special tools just for this. It looks like a gear puller.

Just FYI, unless u went to a lighter flywheel, u didn't need a new one. All u had to do was to go out and get it turned by and local brake shop.

Default Thanks for all the help

The 85 had a 10" flywheel. I wanted to use the FMS King Cobra clutch set so I got the 10.5" flywheel to go with it. Thanks for all the advice. Now that I've got this out of the way the next thing on my list is gears.
