Q's about cat converters

I need to know where I can find a used set (2) of catalatyic converters for my 84 stang. I want a used set for under 25$ that I can gut out, I just need the casing really, unless anyone knows how to get away with getting your car inspected without cats, (visual inspection, not emissions).

It is a federal offense to buy or sell any used emission control equipment to the general public, including cats. That doesn't mean you won't find someone that does, but I wouldn't announce it on a public message board.

I AM NOT SUGGESTING YOU DO THIS, BUT THIS IS WHAT I WOULD DO PERSONALLY. I TAKE NO LIABILITY FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS IF YOU DO THE FOLLOWING. IN FACT, I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING YOU DO AT ALL!

You could hunt the boneyards for catalytic converter heat shields, then just spot weld them onto the H-pipe...or snag a piece of sheet steel and bend & cut it to LOOK like a shield, then weld it on.

Note: yes, very illegal, mebbe a felony, but saves a lotta cash if you don't get caught. I'm playing devil's advocate here. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/flame.gif

Didnt know it was illegal to buy or sell used equipment, thanks for the tip.
I can get an h- pipe with cats, but I am going to install oldschool heat shielded side dumps on my car ( never seen a fox body with them thought it might be cool). I could go to a junkyard to get some, but it's a little cold to go rooting around for some, and also I have never had seen a cop looking underneath of a car for cats, what would give them the suspicion? Maybe I'll go the legal route, I dont need a felony on my record.

Once you've got them, nobody is going to bust you for having used equipment, it's just the matter of getting them. I knew this from classes i took when I was going to get my smog license, but figured nobody enforced it. Then I went to a local junkyard trying to get a cat for my ex's POS K-car. I was lying in the mud for close to an hour trying to wrestle that f'er out, and ended up with mud everywhere. I got up to the window, and they told me I could buy the pipes before and after the cat, but the cat itself had to stay. Pissed me off. I ended up tossing it over the fence when no one was looking.
