Question about 5.0 motor in 86 GT.

Hey guys i bought this car from my cousin and he had this car since 88 he bought it off some and my cousin did know anything about it, HERE MY QUESTION, i been seeing what evey body has been saying about how much HP these motor should make with mild work, and there puting like 270 to 300 thats with alot of aftermarkets, so i took my car to get a dyno, now its an 86 GTHO motor, the first place i took it to i got 280 on the dyno so about 5 miles down the road i took to another guy that i know and on his machine i got 282, now he says that it might have some work done, he says it looks like it was taken apart because there is the orange rubber gaskets used to seal everything, ford uses cork, IS THIS CORRECT.
thanks alot
Ernie

If you are putting down 280rwhp then something has been done.

eeh102582 04-02-2004 10:19 PM

anybody else

86GT 04-03-2004 10:10 AM

Something has been done for that. Stock 1986 Mustang HO 5.0 motor makes 200hp and 285 lb/ft of torque. (I believe thats at the flywheel, not at the rear wheels).

429mustang 04-03-2004 12:11 PM

280 at the wheels is pretty tough, do you have any pics of the engine you could post? Most of the works probably inside the motor though, is the intake/heads still stock?

ponyexpress289 04-03-2004 12:19 PM

280hp

holy moly 280hp is outrageous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .......maybe ..... i dunno

84gt347 04-03-2004 01:20 PM

sombody must have put in an ls1

82 GT 04-03-2004 01:31 PM

There should be obvious changes under the hood for an engine putting out that much power.
Different heads, intakes and headers would be some of the obvious things you would notice.
Take it to the track and see what it runs. You'll find out for sure if work has been done or not.

Dark_5.0 04-03-2004 05:50 PM

It has some pretty serious mods to put down those numbers. The changed should be real obvious.

eeh102582 04-03-2004 11:29 PM

hey guys the heads i believe are stock, the intake is stock, the only thing i did was take off the somg and ac pulleys and got a shorter belt bbk long tube headers, blaster 3 coil, taloyor race wires, and a bbk cold air intake. thats it, should the gaskets on everything be orange from factory? thanks
Ernie

82 GT 04-04-2004 12:03 PM

OK..I'm going to be the first to say it.....something does not quit add up here. Either there is more work done to that engine that you can't see or those dyno numbers were grossly inflated.
You don't get those kinds of dyno numbers with those simple mods........I'm sorry....you just don't
Take it to the track and let us know what the MPH was through the traps.

eeh102582 04-04-2004 03:17 PM

hey guys i will got the track asap, im still wondering what the stock gasket sets look like, i thought the stock are cork? mine are orange. could that be a possiblity that the motor was taped into,
Ernie

82 GT 04-04-2004 08:33 PM

Hmm...I'll look at my gaskets on my "88 GT tomorrow. That engine, I know, is bone stock.
I don't think they are cork though...they're rubber but I don't remember what color.

lx mike 04-04-2004 09:00 PM

no way that engine is making 280 rwhp with stock heads and intake. is it a cobra intake? ported heads? diff cam?

like you said alot of cars are making 270-300 with alot of aftermarket parts and you doing it with stock parts?? there more to that engine than you know or are telling most stock 5.0s dyno around 180-190 rwhp. with a cobra intake, bigger mass air, 65 mm t.b and flowmaster exhaust i dyno'd 235 rwhp.

Dark_5.0 04-05-2004 12:19 AM

Post a pic of your motor please.

I want to see it.

eeh102582 04-05-2004 10:54 AM

hey guys i will get a pic on here soon.
a buddy of mine had a G-TECH pro comp, so i though i would give it a try before he left the HP from that thing said 283 and i did a 3 runs with it just to get a 1/4 time and speed, and i got a 12.64 on the first run a 12.58 then a 12.49 on the last the top speed started 105 to 111, next time i see him i will do some other stuff with it. im also going to take the car to another place to get it dyno on it and the place is call Mr mustang, so i will post a pic and let you guy know what happens. thank agiain
Ernie

sedanman 04-05-2004 07:10 PM

Something is not right. The heads either are ported to crazyness (like R/S cars) or it has GT40 irons on it. Does it lope? It has to have a cam to make that power.

Dark_5.0 04-05-2004 10:20 PM

People do hit 300rwhp with the stock cam and 1.7's.

I just cant imagine making 280RWHP with the stock headers and intake manifold.

People can hit 300rwhp with one of these given parts but stock heads, cam, intake and headers that I want to see.

Dark_5.0 04-06-2004 08:16 AM

Maybe it was an imaginary dyno.

eeh102582 04-06-2004 02:07 PM

Hey guys i went to the other place yestarday to get another dyno, and i got the same thine 281hp, i had the guy look over the car, we took off the intake and it had be ported and polished very much, the lower intake was also done, he did not want to get to deep into the engine, he said its very possible to pull that HP with looking at the intake and the other stuf i have on the car,he also said that the heads are stock but they probably are worked. thanks agian

ponyexpress289 04-06-2004 03:50 PM

hmmm

maybe i can see those kind of numbers with porting..... damn .....how much does that kind of thing cost?
maybe ill be able to break 210hp !!!!!!!!:)

eeh102582 04-06-2004 04:14 PM

if you are quite handy you can do it your self the guy told me, i could not believe that i was making that much power either, i mean i have
BBK longtubes,
Off road H
1 chamber Flows
BBK cold air intake
Blaster 3 Coil
Talor race wires
race plugs
shorter belt(no smog or ac pully)
and a adjustable fuel presure regulator.

82 GT 04-06-2004 06:21 PM

Porting alone won't make those numbers...not with how small the factory valves are in those "E" series heads....unless larger valves were installed.
Can't you tell by just how the car runs?? With that much power it should be super obvious that work has been done.......
Traction should be a major problem at this point.

eeh102582 04-06-2004 09:45 PM

Traction lol, you mean like when i stop and take off i normally just take off in 2nd because if i take of in first and get on it forget about it. it really does sound alot mean then most stangs i hear. i will post a sound and motor pic for you guys i just have to figure out how.

Well....there's no doubt about it now.....there's definatly been some work done.
See my signature below? If I'm going less than 25mph in 1st and punch it, I get instant cloud of tire smoke....and that's with an automatic.
I'd say your engine has some mods done somewhere.

blue oval 50h 04-06-2004 11:10 PM

thats alot of dyno runs................i smell something fishy here:confused:

sedanman 04-06-2004 11:24 PM

BINGO!! we have a winner here!!

82 GT 04-07-2004 05:02 PM

I said that a long time ago.

lx mike 04-07-2004 07:06 PM

didn't see that!

eeh102582: is your name eric or is the guy you got the car from named eric??

eeh102582 04-07-2004 08:27 PM

hey mike, no the guy i got the car from his name is dan ,

82 GT 04-07-2004 11:01 PM

I think it's safe to say now that this car is not stock. The only way to tell exactly what's been done to it is tearing it down.

Dark_5.0 04-07-2004 11:09 PM

Either your mechanic is retarded or you are misleading us.

Taking off in 2nd gear proves nothing I did my burnouts in second when I was stock.

I you sure his name wasnt Eric:p
