Question about this computer chip
My friend who had a mustang just found out that I just bought one and he brought me this chip that he bought second hand from someone but he never put it in his car. he had a 91 stang and I have an 88 so im not sure if it will work. Im not even sure if it is what it is. It says SHM motorsport (ive never even heard of them) and on the back whoever had it wrote "FTL3" on it. Any info about this thing would be apprieciated, also if i put it in and its not the right one will it harm my motor? thanks guys

Sean Hyland Motorsports is where it came from. The FTL3 is most likely the calibration of the ECU it was programmed for. As far as using it on an 88 dont think so. Or less you have switched over to mass air or you actually own an 88 1/2 it wont work for you. Fuel and timing curves are different. As far as harming the motor? The potential is there. SHM calibrates chips to your specific combo. You might be able to find someone who will reflash the chip for you but I think I would first upgrade to Mass air then go from there. Tighter tolerances as far as tuning. Easier to work around when upgrading cams and heads and things like that. http://www.jmschip.com/products/chip-product.html If you read down on that page it states 87-88 on site only. So its possible but easier with Mass Air. I have used them before and actually still have that chip set waiting for someone to use it. Hope this helps.

That is weird 'FTL3' is the PCM box code, usually any 4 digit box code is for a 94+ Ford. Yours is probably a 'DA1' being a SD car.
The chip would have to be for your PCM family, same MAF size & cal., same injector size, same idle points, etc.... However a MAF chip on a SD will not work. |
