Default Installing Explorer Intake

Hey guys, I'm thinking of installing my upper and lower this weekend. I only have the upper and lower, no gaskets, no nothing. I have a few questions. What kind of gasket should I get and should I just ask for a 5.0 explorer intake upper and lower gaskets? Are there any other suggestions of things I need? I also may P&P with a drill, I don't think I can get my hands on an air die grinder, any suggestions there? I'm kind of itching for a little more power so I kind of wanted to install this, this weekend. Anyone have an links on installations, anything? haha Thanks guys

Matt

It is really a piece of cake, I ordered GT-40 gaskets and a 1/2 inch phenolic spacerfor mine.

Heres what you need to know. On the #5 runner on the lower intake you are going to have to tap a hole in there for your a.c.t. sensor. You will need a 3/8" pipe thread tap.

There is also a hole you have to tapp on the #4 runner, but this is optional. You can avoid this step by not running coolant lines to your throttle body. Thats what I did.

You will have to screw the throttle body studds out of your stock intake and screw them into your Explorer intake.

As far as the vacuum lines go there are a couple that you will have to plug cause you dont use them.

If you need me to take some pics of mine let me know and I will send you some.

As far as port and polishing I wouldnt do it just grind out any casting marks you see and you should be fine.

Feel free to PM me with any questions. I installed my Explorer intake and a set of port and polished E7's at the same time. I knocked off a little over 4 tenths and picked up just over 3 mph in the 1/4.

Later,

Where did you order the gaskets and 1/2 inch spacer from and how much were they?

If I'm correct, I can also run the ACT to the air intake? I have a MAC fenderwall unit, so I would have to drill into that.

Am I gaining or hurting anything by not running those lines to the TB, it makes sense that not doing it would keep the TB cooler, but is that really true?

If you don't mind taking and sending me a few pics, especially of the studds that have to be swapped over and what lines are sopposed to be blocked off, that would be great. What did you use to block those lines? Also what did you do about the EGR valve?

I didn't really want to port as much as polish, I wanted them to be nice and smooth.

I got my spacer and gaskets off fo ebay brand new for 15 bucks. The only reason I got the spacer is cause I needed more clearance to clear my FPR. If you get a spacer you also need longer bolts. So if you dont need extra clearance I wouldnt bother with the spacer.

You are correct you car can install the A.C.T. sensor on your air inlet tube.

I dont think the coolant lines going to the Throttle body make much of a difference if they are on or off. My car ran great with them on and it runs great with them off.

The throttle body bolts that you have to transfer over to the explorer intake are the 4 bolts that hold the throttle body and EGR spacer on.

Everything transfers over to the explorer intake with out any problems.

Take your stock upper intake and the Explorer upper intake flip them upside down and figure out which vacuum ports you are going to use and which ones your not going to use. To plug them off you can slip a rubber nipple over the ones that you are not using. I pulled out the metal vacuum lines tapped the holes and screwed in set screws on mine, but that is probably overkill.

I will send you some pics tonight.

Later,

The stock system uses the coolant lines though the TB to cool the air from the EGR. The coolant (even at operating temp) is still cooler then the air the EGR recirlculates though the intake. I would run the coolant lines if it were my car. If it were a drag car and you had no emissions and removed the EGR and all that junk, then I don't see a need to run the coolant lines through the TB.

About how much HP will the explorer intake add? Isn't it the same as a GT-40 intake?

Sorry I couldnt get better pictures. I hope these help a little.

There are different ways you can do the vacuum lines this is just the way that I did mine.

Have any ?'s PM me.

BTW: With stock heads you will only see about 10-12 HP at the crank.

Later,
