Radiator/ Fan Shroud
I recently bought a griffin radiator. I was told that the 27x19 radiator would fit with no problems, but the fan shroud doesn't have enough room to fit in between the water pump and the radiator. I don't mind not having the fan shroud on, except that I need the overflow tank for the radiator. Is there any trick as to putting the fan shroud on (modifying it, or cutting it)? I would think with the radiator being twice the stock size, that I won't even need the overflow tank, what do you guys think? I know there are plenty of people with the same radiator I have, so if there is anything you did to keep the fan shroud, let me know. Thanks, Keith

You must have the shroud, otherwise you will overheat. Really.
I'm working on your vacuum schematic. Take care, -Chris |
Chris is absolutely right. You must have the shroud or the fan will not cool properly.
Good luck! Quote:

Wierd, I have a friend with a 92 lx hatch, with the flex-a-lite fan and no shroud, he doesn't have any overheating probs at all. He lives in SE Texas with humidity at least 95% daily. Just my $.02 of what I've seen. The shroud is in both of my 88's!

fan shroud
Is there any trick to installing the fan shroud? There is only about a 1/2" clearance in between my fan shroud and my water pump (with the fan on). I am eventually going to buy a 130V alternator, and an electric fan, but for now I guess I need to install the fan shroud. I am thinking I need to cut the fan shroud down to install it, but I'm not sure. The Griffin radiator is about twice as thick as the old one, so I'm having a hard time trying to install the fan shroud. If anyone has had any luck installing it, please let me know. Thanks, Keith.

I just installed a 31"X19" Griffin universal NASCAR radiator in my 89 LX.
I was able to use the stock fan and shroud without too much trouble. The fan is closer to the rad, but not too far, I dropped the shroud in with the fan/clutch off, then put the fan on and found where to mount the shroud. I used two HEAVY zip ties at the top, and radiator shroud clips from the "Help!" line of stuff at the autoparts store. My biggest issue was the line from the overflow running into the lower radiator hose. |
wrong radiator?
I think I may have gotten the wrong radiator. I got the 27x19 inch radiator. The fan shroud lines up exactly where the upper and lower hoses attach to the radiator. Are there any other fan shrouds, or fans that might work? Thanks, Keith.
