With the date code of 23U, your car was built on July 23, 1965. Sorry, but you have a '65 and not a 64 1/2. Being this late, maybe even a '66.

What is the VIN number?

The light lens say 64 because that is when they were approved. the 65A on the door tag stands for coupe with standard interior, the "D" stand for 289 four barrel 1964 1/2other clues would include a generator instead of a alternator and a single wire horn ring on the steering wheel. note that the horns on a 64 1/2 have a relay that controls them and the horns are mounted to the lower control arm strut braces down by the bottom of the radiator, and they are huge!

For what it's worth, Ford counts them all as '65's. We Mustang nuts are the ones that make the 64 1/2 distinction. The 64 1/2's also were all 260 CID weren't they?

The 64 1/2 came with the F code 260-2V for the base V8 and the 289 4V "D" Code engine as the step before the K code 289 hypo. The 260 was replace with the C code 289-2V for the "65" model, and the D code 289 was replaced with the A code 289-4V. The difference between the D and A is 25 more horsepower and higher compression.

The "D" from the dataplate from the initial note in this string is actually the color code. Looking at the VIN of 5F07T799675, the engine code is "T", or a 200 six.

Hate to break it to you, but this is not a 64 1/2. The build date says it all, along with the consecutive unit number 799675 in the VIN.
