![]() I have taken everything out of the rearend except for the pinion gear. The only thing I found was on the right axle were the wheel barring sits there is some slight pitting, very minor. Most of it came out with some light sanding. The baring looks fine. I'm completely stumped. I have a friend that is a mechanic and he thinks it could be a suspension problem. Any body that has any ideas post um for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

![]() I have since found that the right axle is pitted and needs to be replaced along with the barring. Just need to find an axle.

![]() Is the bearing the problem? Is it froze up? Does it roll freely, just has pits. It is often that a noise will travel. It will make you swear that the problem is in a diffferant location. Does the car feel like something is actually slowing you down? My fan clutch just finished driving me crazy. Changed the belt, tensioner pully, almost changed the water pump. If the pinion turns free, put it all back together, every time you add a piece, roll it again. When it is complete if it rolls free, it is not the rear end.

![]() What caused it? Does the bearing still roll? Is the race welded to the axle?

![]() The bearing still rolls. I haven't had a chance to take the bearing out. I'll know tomorrow morning.

![]() The bearing was pitted on the inside of the race as well. I replaced it with a combination offset baring/seal from advacned auto parts. Still grinding/growling. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? I wonder what pkrwud thinks about it.

![]() Ditch your entire rear end for one from an 87-88 thunderbird turbo coupe. Will convert you to 4 lug rear discs and 3.73 gears stock, can find in the junkyards plentyful for under 200$. That should do it.
I have a rear end waiting to go in my car, pretty much a straight bolt up.

I thought you said it was squealing ? If its growling under acceleration and goes quiet as soon as you let off (coast) .... then its very likely the ring and pinion |

![]() 93, The reason I have been so persitant, is that I never believed that the noise came from your rear. I still don't. If it made that much noise you would have found it. I'm sorry but I think that it is elsewhere. Good luck with it.

![]() Its a hard sound to explain. It changes. Sometimes its a growling, somtimes it sounds like two metals rubbing, and other times its a high pitched squeel. Today was the first time I was able to get someone else to drive the car so I could listen to it outside. When your inside the car it sounds like it's isolated to the right side of the car. Now that I have listened to it on both sides of the car, It sounds more centered on the back of the car. I'm gonna take a look at the u joints, followed by the pinion bearing. If there's no luck there, I may have to look into the thunderbird rear.
If you think the sound is traveling, where from? A noise coming from the front of the car couldn't travel through the tranny could it? That's why I'm limiting the trouble shooting to the rear of the car. Thanx for the help. |
