Rear end size?

Hey guys...how can I tell what size rear end I have? I've got 4.10's in it and if my memory serves me right, there's 12 bolts on the differential cover... Would this be a factory sized rear end? Someone told me the factory for these years can't hold 4.10's. Thanks!

By the way, car is in the shop right now so I cant double check any of this..but I also think my factory axle code was M, for the wimpiest rear..like 2.73 or something...if that makes a difference or not. Probably not...

8.8

So second question, is 8.8 the factory size?

If you mean from the factory, no. But they can be added.

Nixon1 02-18-2003 09:27 PM

No, what I mean is my friend says the 8.8 rear physically CANNOT HOLD 4.10's. I never believed him, but he thinks he knows everything and a bag of chips about Mustangs...I gotta hand it to him, there is a lot he knows, but I can't believe that the 8.8 can't actually hold 4.10's.

NotchJohnson 02-18-2003 10:22 PM

Uhhhhh........no. The 8.8 will hold 4.10s just fine.

Nixon1 02-18-2003 11:13 PM

Ok he's just a loser then. Go yell at him. Lol, he's on the boards..he's got a white 65 with a 289 and a 3 spd auto currently...forget his username but he's a terrible speller and loves German... ;)

Mach 1 02-19-2003 01:27 AM

well, if it makes you feel any better, i had an 8.8 with 4.10's, so your friend is clueless.........

Nixon1 02-19-2003 07:37 AM

;) Part that makes me even more mad is that a friend of ours who's also a Mustang lover, they both ganged up on me telling me I was wrong and that I can't have 4.10's unless I've got like a 9 inch rear or something... Idiots..argh.

I just want to add that even the 7.5" rear can hold 4.10's. I almost got them for my 4cyl, LOL.

BLACK85GT 02-19-2003 05:14 PM

go to the racer walsh site and you can order a brand new 8.8 with 3.73 or 4.10

5.0 Pony 02-20-2003 04:47 PM

The 8.8 will hold up fine, Summit sells a set of 5.67 gears for an 8.8, i dont think they would sell something that wont work. They also sell the same ratio 5.67 gears for a 7.5"

Nixon1 02-20-2003 09:09 PM

Will 4.10's fit in a 9 inch? The same guy now says that he thought I had a 9 inch rear, and that 4.10's won't go in a 9 in.

Tony Frank 02-20-2003 09:30 PM

yup sure do.....

i have an 8.8 rear end with 4.10's and my dad has 4.30's in his 9 inch

Nixon1 02-22-2003 03:15 PM

I see what's up now...we got mixed up here... According to him, 4.10's will fit in an 8.8, where 4.11's won't....we were getting the two mixed up cause they're so close..
