rear end trouble, please help guys
Hey,
I'll try to keep this short. Whenever I drive my car long distances on the highway, well, at least an hour at high speeds I have a problem with my rear end. As soon as I get off the highway, and at very low speeds, like in a parking lot, when I'm turning I get a loud grinding sound from my rear end. I know that it isn't good but I really have no idea what it is. Hopefully someone on here knows so I don't get ripped off if I have to get it fixed. thanks alot guys Scott |
axle?
I had a similar problem on my 88 .Has the car ever been wrecked? The axle turned out to be warped on my car because the car I got the rearend out of had been wrecked!Just a thought.

hey fast 88
My car actually spun out on the highway in january and I told those bastards to check the rear end to make sure that there was no damage. How much do you see that costing or how much did it cost you to get that fixed. thanks alot scott |
Rear end noise
If you have a bent axle, don't replace with stock axles. A quality axle set (Moser Streets) runs about $225. (for both) plus labor for installation.
You may also have a bad bearing that gets noisy when it gets hot. Somewhat cheaper to replace than axles. Checked the fluid lately? You could simply be low and the heat of the highway speeds is making the gears grind. Not good. :( |
if ya got da $$
Like stated above if ya got the dough go ahead and spring for the aftermarket axles.I own a salvage yard so at the time I just pulled the entire rear out of another car (86 aod gt) that I had for parts,I got 3.27's to boot lol.I later installed moser street axles I bought them used for $100 and the guy even threw in a set of 3.73's .Good Luck

thanks guys,
I have to admit that I was a little scared that it would cost alot more than that, thats not too bad. What do you guys think the chances are that I can go after my insurance for some of this considering it happened in an accident and they missed it? Just a try |
