Ok, I have seen alot of ppl with gear drive. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having gear drive???
Is gear drive better than a timing chain???
Thanks in advance

I thought about it then figured I would spend my money else were. It it more acurate as far as keeping on the car on time, but it takes away some horsepower due to the fact it takes more power to turn the gears and theres more friction, not much though, also it's not made to turn over 6000rpm I believe. The only reason I looked into it, is because of the gear whine we all love.

If you love the sound I'd get one. You just might want to make sure you're car can back the sound it emits. Ask someone about the knock sensor. I think the vibration the gear drive emits might make your knock sensor go off. I believe you can bypass this sensor though.

who said a gear drive wont go over 6k rpm? mine was wound to 8k rpm.. some of the gear drive require that you drill and tap the front oil galley... gotta be carefull that you dont get metal shavings in the engine

I've heard a few gear drives and personally it would drive me crazy. The quiet ones are still kinda loud. Before you buy anything you might want to listen to someone with the exact gear drive that you want to buy and determine if you want that constant whining noise. I personally think that they just sound like a dying power steering pump and it makes the car sound like there's something wrong with it if you didn't know it had a gear drive. If you get a quality double roller timing chain there's actually less high end friction (more power) and it should last basically around 150,000 miles. I don't know how long gear drives last so i can't comment on that.

Thumbs up

I have the pete jackson quiet gear drive and love it. They don't sound as good on fords as they do on chevys, but they still sound good. All you have to do to get them to fit is you have to grind the inside of the timing cover.

That's the gear drive I have. You'll love the sound, it does not sound like a dying power steering pump(hmmm.. I think I've heard that comment somewhere else in 5.0 magazine on a vortech blower...). It sounds exactly like a roots type supercharger. As I said before, make sure your car can run the number if it's going to make that sound. Gear drives attract a lot of attention, and nothing would make a chevy guy happier than to say he beat a blown mustang. Do you know what I mean?

Cool

I know a guy with a Pro-Street 67 Camaro who runs a gear drive in a big block 454,with a dual carb set-up..talk about a awsome sounding car!!

He's never had any problems with it..and has had it over 6000rpm also many times

I just heard or read some where that on a small block Ford there not SUPPOSE to be spun over 6k, but don't know how true that is.
