you need a new carrier...you can get a used one from a boneyard.
try a '94-'95 w/ low miles...
Or get a new one...but they are not cheap.
Expect to pay about $225 for used
Do a gear swap while your in there.

HOw much are they new? ARe they hard to install?

I'm assuming your LX is a V-8. If it's not get rid of it and don't waste any money. Either your posi is wore out or someone swapped rearends on you. A traction lock is around $350-$400 new. It costs around $200 labor. My GT cost $550 to have 4:10's installed with the price of build and a bearing kit. You might as well have the gears changed while you're in their. Here's what it will cost new-$350 posi, $100 bearing kit, $180 gears, $200 labor, $20 dollars posi anti seize= $850 w/o tax. MAKE SURE IT IS AN 8.8 REAREND! If I were you I'd find one used. I see you live in Stockton. Do they have the recycler classifieds there? Tons of hipo parts used including many 8.8 rears. You can find the recycler in liquor stores and gas stations.

According to the axle stamp on my Uncle's 1989 GT vert it did not come with positraction. It only spins one wheel as well, he has the AOD. According to him the numbers match with the numbers in his Ford book.

Yes, check the code for which rear-end you got. It should be stamped on the door tag. If you don't have traction-lok, a new differential housing will cost about $225. If you do have traction-lok, you can buy a kit for about $70 to rebuild it. As suggested, you may as well put gears in while you do this.

Unit 5302, that's really bizarre that a GT would come without traction-lok. I have an 89 GT convertible and it definitely has it. Did your uncle buy the car new? If not, someone probably put in a new rear-end that didn't have traction-lok. What does the door jamb sticker say he has? It should have an:
8 - 2.73
M - 2.73 w/limited slip
Y - 3.08
Z - 3.08 w/limited slip

The code is z, so I guess it has the limited slip. WHere can I get this reuild kit at? Thanks for the help.

swtstang 05-01-2001 12:55 PM

Ok guys, I went to the local shop and they wanted $650 to replace it. Where can I get this rebuild kit at? Thanks for all of the help.

Call your dealership and get it from them. Mine was $74. Order some Red Line gear oil from BrothersPerformance.com or your local shop if they carry it. You'll need 3 quarts. The kit comes with friction modifier, but you should probably buy another bottle to add to the differential when you refill it.
