Rebuilt Tranny = Piece of $#@% - Part II
Well, after all this work pulling the tranny out and reinstalling it twice I was hoping it would be done and have all these headaches behind me. But alas, I was dreaming I guess. Now the tranny won't stay in reverse and it grinds in 2nd gear.
I'm going to take it back to the shop in Indy and shove it up someone's @$$ and tell them if they don't get it right this time I'm going to demand a FULL refund on top of the $250 labor I am demanding now plus an additional $250 labor for having to pull it out again. Anybody have a good Tremec for sale cheap? ------------------ Too much to list. Damn dude... I've seen some shitty rebuilds on T-5's before but your luck is one of the worst. I got my T-5 from D&D performance in MI, since a rebuild costs as much as a new one, hehe.
|
Yeah, it's great looking at my Stang up on blocks. And driving my wife's purple Neon around is starting to give me a complex. I feel like a flamer in that damn thing.
I guess owning the car for a year with 125,000+ miles on it and not having a single problem should have been a sign that sh!t was about to hit the fan and splatter everywhere. ------------------ Too much to list. Hey Kev, sorry to hear you are still haveing tranny problems... Among other things I would demand a differant tranny this time if I were you. And for what it is worth I don't think you are a flammer, well not yet anyway. LOL Man, you better get on them so you can have your car ready for saturday!! Good luck dude! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/cool.gif

Bob Hanlon is a nice guy and so is his wife, I just bought a good bit of my parts from him. When this T-5 dies which I hope isn't anytime soon I am going to have him build me a Badd A** Tremec.
Kevin, it really sucks to see you having this many problems, I would ask for a new tranny and ask them to take money off for all the labor you have put in it, I think that is only fair. If not you can ship it to me and I'll rebuild the damn thing. Do you know if Tim D. has gotten to the track yet? I used to talk to him a good bit but have lost contact with him since the move and I was bustin' A** on my car. Ask him to drop me a e-mail if you talk to him. I can't afford another tranny at the moment. At least not unless I could get my money back from these %$#@ers. I'm driving the car to them this morning and let them see for themselves. Well, wish me luck guys. I'm driving the car to Indy busted tranny and all (70 miles). 2nd gear is toast, but the other gears should hold up fine right?

Well, I called the tranny shop and talked to them finally. The guy asked me if I was using the stock shifter and I told him I had a Pro 5.0. He then informed me that the aftermarket shifters tear up transmissions and I was like HUH?!
He also said shift forks don't bend in a T5. Hmm. We got ourselves a winner boys! |
shifter forks do not bend..... they are cast aluminum. cast alum does not bend, it breaks.
you should have never said anything about the aftermarket shifter, anything not factory will give the trannyshop an excuse to say why it broke. just say everything was factory origional. |
im not a T-5 driver, but isnt one of the big reasons to get an aftermarket shifter to NOT tear up your tranny?

Well, I'm not too worried about them saying it's my fault now. The Ford dealer I took the tranny to initially is going to tell them to make good on this PLUS labor charges or they are pulling all of their business from them http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif
Not to mention I didn't even get to move the car more than a foot before it jumped out of reverse. And after finally getting it out of my driveway and went for a drive it was grinding in 2nd gear and I was babying it. ------------------ Too much to list. I had similar agony with my T-5 the best advice is to have a reputable shop do the work for you. I still have a Piece of Crap T-5 in my garage that blew a $470 sized hole in my wallet, that simply will not shift into reverse and chatters in second. When my small claims case finally settles he will get a nice bill for triple damages and the cost to remove and replace the trans. Buyer beware I learned my lesson the hard way.
Now the previously screwed up trans I took out was rebuilt for $575 by a local shop and works great and I am happy now http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif The other trans awaits surgical implantaion in the ripoff artists bunghole http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/eek.gif ------------------ Frank W 90 5.0 LX coupe Daily driver. The stock one went at 102,000 miles racing a Vette at Moroso when I hit third gear... http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/eek.gif Replaced it with a World class one and that went about 2 years later when the main shaft broke destroying the casing and all that good stuff! I dropped the tranny off yesterday and the guy that owned the place threw it up on a bench and had it apart in less than 2 minutes. He really looked like he knew what he was doing so I don't understand why I am having all these problems. He also mentioned that he put a heavy duty bearing retainer on it but it was still made out of aluminum. I thought the heavy duty ones were steel?

Well, he said they couldn't find a damn thing wrong with the tranny and they tore it completely apart and put it back together. I don't have very high hopes now. If I put it back in and it still grinds I'm taking it to the track anyway and throwing some slicks on it and thrashing this damn thing until the car won't move. He'll surely find something wrong with it then. Then I'm going to demand my tranny back that I had originally, $400 labor, $60 for gas driving back and forth to Lafayette and Indianapolis, $20 in tranny fluid, and more than likely court costs. I'm sick of this.
What makes it good though is if he doesn't make it good he'll lose all business with the Ford dealer in Lafayette which is a bunch. ------------------ Too much to list. Best ET on the car so far with stock 2.73 gears - 13.73@102mph Indiana Stangers Association Buy your parts here ICQ# 42269241 |
hey maybe this is a stupid question ...but you did adjust the stops on the pro 50 to make sure its going all the way in gear....i dont mean to insult you but ive done things were i've gotten mad and overlooked simple things ,but then thats me
|
When my T5 went out, I bought a super duty T5 from JEGS, it's like $1099 and it has held up awesome.

Yeah, I tried the adjustments. They were fine.

Well, I got tranny number 3 installed today and it's doing the same f%$king thing as it did last time. It's jumping out of reverse and grinding in 2nd. I know it's not the shifter because we pulled the stop all the way out and it still does it. It feels like it doesn't want to go all the way into reverse when I pull the shifter back. And even when it does go all the way back it feels tight and notchy like something is messed up.
The shop is in Indianapolis Indiana and it's called All Standard Transmission. BEWARE! ------------------ Too much to list. Best ET on the car so far with stock 2.73 gears - 13.73@102mph Indiana Stangers Association Buy your parts here ICQ# 42269241 |
well sad to say but i think its time to give up on this guy. apparantly he just doesnt know what to look for thats causing problems. i'd say file a civil suit and start saving money to find new tranny.inform this guy of your intent to file civil suit ...maybe he'll settle and give your money back .but ether way give up on his shop your just killing yourself pulling and installing tranny.as hard as it is to leave the car set just be patient and wait till you can get another trannie. or do some researce and find a shop that knows t5s and how to fix them. this guy just doesn't know what he's doing with these trannys.if another shop can actually fix that transmision than i think yuo will definatly win civil suit and get some labor money. look around in mustang community for somone aruond your area who knows t5s.and god forbid just drive theneon till you can get your trannie done right...well good luck

Or you could just get a baseball bat with some nails in and........well nevermind. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/wink.gif |
The tranny was bought through a Ford dealer so they are refunding the money and I'm keeping the tranny. My buddy Mark, a.k.a. stangsrule loaned me his old T5 and it works great. It jumps out of 2nd when you are decelerating, but I try not to use the tranny to slow down anyway so no biggie. Thanks Mark!

Anytime Kev, just sorry I didn't think about it eariler. It was buried on my garage waiting for a re-build so I kind of forgot about it... Anyway, hope it gets you through till you get yours straightened out... http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/cool.gif

We have a feeling this rebuilt tranny just needs a new set of shift forks stuck in it. If that's all that's wrong with it then I'll have a new tranny for the cost of shift forks http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif
Also, it was a pain pulling the tranny 4 times but I know how to pull a tranny now without a hitch. Check this out... Tools needed to swap out a T5: - Floor jack - 11/16" wrench or socket to remove the MAC Pro Chamber. - 12mm box end wrench for the driveshaft bolts. - 7/16" wrench to remove the speedo cable. - Screwdriver to unhook neutral and reverse sensors. - 1/2" and 15mm sockets to remove crossmember. - 5/8" socket to remove the tranny mount. -Small crescent wrench for removing the O2 sensors. - 3/8" drive ratchet to pull drain plug. - 16mm socket for the 4 bolts that holds the tranny to the bell housing. |
Just got a World Class T-5 Tranny and Center force Clutch in mine.. Runs sweet.. Feels strong and tight like it should.. if you can afford it.. go for it..
|
That's what I have planned as soon as funds permit. I have a few things I need to get first though if I can get the fore mentioned piece of sh!t tranny to work for me.
