Default replacing E-brake cables...need help

I am replacing the broken emergency brake cablees on my '82 GT.
Do I have to remove the rear brakes completly so I can slide the cable through the backing plate or can I just get away with removing a spring or two?
What can I use to squeeze to cable fingers together to slide it out?
