Post reset timing, have a problem..

Ok guys, my dilemma is my timing has'nt been checked in a while, and my track times slowed a bit, last time i had a friend advance it he did a good job, well i tried it myself and im doing something wrong? well my first test resulted in major pinging, i backed it off and it helped a bit, has good power, but im doing this with 93 octane and it is HOT! out here, like 90+degrees..

But what is the fixed pointer on the timing indicator? is it the part that says time? or the little groove or c shaped notched in the indicator? if you know what my stupid question is help!! thnx, dont worry i wont put the timing light on the coil wire lol!

But is it alright to hook my timing light to the #1 cyldr on the distributor? and can i pull the spout while the car is running?

sorry about a 100 questions..
