Red face Ticking noise from under the hood

My 95GT has 64K on the clock. I noticed it makes a very slight ticking noise from under the hood. The noise fluctuates with RPMs and I thought it may be an exhaust leak. However, I put the H pipe on today and it still ticks slightly. It's been to two different shops in the past couple of days for add-ons and neither mechanic mentioned anything about it. Today's guy was standing right near the driver's side door whileI was revving it and he didn't say anything. Oil is clean and looks good, mileage is typical for a 5.0 and it drives fine, staying nice and cool. My brother's old IROC-Z (with a EFI 406 CI small block)had injectors that ticked, but that was normal. Anyone have noisy injectors that tick lightly? I don't think it's typical of a lifter in these cars (aren't they rollers?)to stick and tick is it?

could be the header gasket, might have a break in it some where along the line, hopefully it is nit a rist pin or somethig, i have the same thing going on in my car right now and it turns out that is is either the rod bearing or a ristpin, but with the low miles you have i doubt it is that...but good luck

I didn't know the throw out bearing would tick. It's a ticking sound like a stuck lifter-type of noise. I doubt it's interna; engine noise. I'll know for sure when I finally install the headers.

Todd, keep us posted. I am experiencing the same noise on my 94. 61k on the odometer. Oil pressure from the stock guage is high, around the 'MA'. I have determined that mine might be a bad lifter. Let me know when you replace the headers because that's what I orginially thought it was.

I will do that Brad. I will be getting the headers in roughly a week or so. Probably putting them on the following week. As soon as I do, I will let you know if the ticking stops (keep your fingers crossed for me). Another knowledgable technician was admiring the car tonight. I fired it up for him and revved it a few times to hear the lovely osund of my new off-road H pipe. It ticked as always and he didn't say anything. Maybe because it's my car I'm noticing something that isn't really abnormal. As far as the lifter theory, can a roller lifter stick like a solid or hydraulic tappet does???

Get two and a half feet of heater hose. With the engine running, put one end to your ear, and guide the other end towards the injectors, exhaust ports, valve covers, etc. until you zero in on where the noise is coming from.

Take care

good idea PK. my guess would be header gasket/header or lifter. if your replacing the headers soon, then we'll see.

Did you check all the header bolts?

The reason I ask is because last week I figured out the source of my ticking. It was an exhaust leak on the driver side header! When I first heard the noise I was convinced it was an internal problem. I called my friend to help me figure it out. When he heard it he started laughing at me. He proceeded to remove one header bolt with his fingers and found three others missing.

I have heard MANY stories of loose or missing header bolts, but never anything about injectors on mustangs.

Hope you have an easy header bolt fix and not a bumb lifter.

Good Luck!

Question

What's weird is that I only hear the ticking when I'm seated in the car and the driver's side door is open. Once I get out to try and pinpoint it, I don't hear it anymore. With the hood open, I don't hear it, either. I think it's exhaust. I'll play around with as soon as my schedule permits. I'll let you guys know.

No one has answered his question whether or not its possible for our roller rockers to stick. As for me, I dont have a ticking noise, I have a tapping noise! And I have my noise when the car is warmed up pretty good. I had heads installed and ever since then its done this. The people I bought them from said the stock pushrods would work, but then why would I be experiencing it. So hopefully it wont get worse(has yours at all?)and I'll eventually just replace the pushrods, lifters, and might as well put in the 1.7rr I hear so much about.

Question

Thanks, you're right, I still am wondering about the roller lifters sticking. This noise has me really perplexed-I put my ear to the rocker molding tonight and heard it very clear. It's not very loud and it seems to be coming from about where the bellhousing bolts up to the block or maybe a little behind there. Of course, it's not an acoustically engineered auditorium so it's probably traveling down that way from it's point of origin. I'll try an additive that claims to free sticking lifters-does anyone have a recommendation? I've used Marvel's Mystery Oil in the past.

Some people hate it, but i swear by Slick50. It's always worked for me. But, before you spend the money, try the heater hose idea. You'll be amazed how much it helps.

Take care

Thumbs up

I had a very similar sound in my 87 and i figured it was a sticking lifter. I used some motor flush and ran it hard afterwords for a minute or two and it took care of the ticking. I guess it is possible for a roller lifters to stick, who knew? Light em up!!!

If one of your plug wires is cracked or damaged and a cylinder isn't firing properly, this could cause a ticking noise.. I'd check all of your wires...

Cool

My guess would be that it's either a head gasket or an injector gone bad.

You guys need to get an engine stethescope ! same thing as the heater hose idea but much more safisticated ... and i've seen people get so good with them they could tell you within an inch of where a noise was coming from and what it was !
and yes hydraulic roller lifters can stick like any other hydraulic lifer... same thing only they ride on a roller at the bottom

Actually, I have a mechanics stethoscope, and it is pretty good through metal, but I prefer an open ended hose for external noises (exhaust leaks, fuel injectors, etc.) besides, the odds were better this guy had some hose laying around.

Take care
